Forgot about the oven Iain. It's used less than the heaters  I'll stick the rocker cover in the microwave, as long as it takes less than 4 minutes I can live with that :)

I always use a hot air gun for crackle painting - heat the part up gently first, then give it another quick blast between coats then use it after the 3rd coat to get the crinkle effect going.

works a treat.

maybe Fife being nearer the equator is a factor though

I have crackle painted many things including HUGE rocker covers for BMW's.

The Powder coat stuff is a much, much better coating than ANY crackle black paint. It's more robust, quicker & thicker. n There really isn't any comparison.

Catmint, Andy & Myself all use the same person, I have dealt with Trevor for about 20 years & his work is always top notch. But as Andy says, his workshop is a total shit hole.

I had 5-6 covers done a while ago at Midas Touch, this is the only one I have left, there is a little bit of bubbling near the filler but the others were perfect...

DIY can indeed produce results just as good, but I think you can always tell the difference.
In these two photos, it is easy to see that the finish is different.

2 actually, Andy. I get lots of parts powder coated but as has been said, some companies won't do it. So I get all my satin and gloss done very locally but drive to Midas Touch for the black crackle. Have a look at my heater fronts or rocker covers. Excellent quality despite their horrendous workshop.

I opted for the satin black powder coating. Granted this would have been an easy rattle can job but I was having other parts done anyway so made sense, especially in the depths of winter. Still might try a crackle finish at some point but needs to be a non vented cover otherwise one of Nick's would have been spot on.
