MKII Cooper, what red........
Have a 1969 MKII 998 Cooper........Red over Black.....
Rusty crusty floor, both A panels inner and outer, trunk floor all need replaced, but, over all, rest of shell is not too bad....
Even with all I need to do, I won't even have to take the windows out to do this....
I'm going to try and put this thing back together, saving most of the original paint, and, just doing blow ins where necessary......
Although, the paint is well faded, it doesn't to me look like Tartan Red, seems a bit darker than that......
Were there a couple of options for red on 68-69 MKII Coopers....

Re: MKII Cooper, what red........
Code is RD9 Tartan red . should be the correct red for 1969 998 Cooper .might be a few slight variations in formulation but that is the only one for that model and year .G

Depends on when it was built. I have a late mk2 Austin Cooper that is Flame Red, officially a mk3 colour. Never been painted.

Good point on the weld spatter, grinding sparkles can also embed in glass, all appropriate measures will be taken......
Thanks for the info, just waiting for my Heritage Certificate to confirm date....Any views on what shade Flame Red is compared to Tartan, ie, lighter/darker, more Orange, more Cherry etc.........
Would an August 64 S have been Tartan Red too.....

Re: MKII Cooper, what red........
Flame Red is lighter and brighter than Tartan - and more orange. As said earlier, it is a Mk3 colour really but some Mk3 colours were used on VERY late Mk2s. However - these Mk3 colours were generally supplied monotone so the roof would probably not have been black if your car was Flame Red.
Almost all red Mk1 and Mk2 Coopers will have been Tartan red but there were variations of this so matching is not always easy

The RD9 no 2 is darker than the earlier RD9 Tartan Red, not sure when the colour shade was changed but there's a good chance a 69 MK2 car would have been painted in the darker no.2 red.

Re: MKII Cooper, what red........
Yes, it does look darker to me, which, is exactly why I asked the question.......
I have both doors off the 68 Cooper, and, my 64 S, I'll get them beside each other, and, compare the paint on the inside (none faded) area........Will report back.....

Yep agree, my late Austin was monotone. Previous owner painted the roof white. My equally late Morris Cooper is Flame with a black roof.Old English White wrote:Flame Red is lighter and brighter than Tartan - and more orange. Tartan Red No.2 came in for 1965 I believe.
