Oil plug priming.?
On the rear of an S block adjacent to the water drain off tap there is a threaded blanked off oil gallery that sits extremely close to the oil pump..
Has anybody ever used this..for anything..and what size is it?
I presume it’s BSP.

Re: Oil plug priming.?
On some non-mini A series [XSP/FJ?] it was used as the dry sump pickup point for the remote oil reservoir.

Re: Oil plug priming.?
It's not unique to the S Blocks, it's on all the early blocks.
I have a recollection it was an Oil Primer Port used for the factory test runs, but don't take that as gospel.

Thanks for that. Just checked an early 850 block and had forgotten that they had the same detail.
It’s also appears to have the same thread as the little oil pressure gauge brass sender fitting on the front of the block.

Re: Oil plug priming.?
You can buy extended magnets that fit here.. much like the magnetic sump plug. This is supposed to clean metal fragments from the oil being delivered to the pump (which is after the sump but before the oil filter). It does work ...however...
I have one but was advised to remove it; quick smart. I would say it does work; judging by the amount of metal I found on the magnet when I followed this advice.
A. Its extremely difficult to get at (so it can be cleaned) with the engine in the car ..so
B. The buildup of fragments could block the oil gallery... or more likely .. the buildup will become big enough to be sucked of the magnet suddenly delivering a large chunk of metal fragments into the pump..
Cheers, Ian

Re: Oil plug priming.?
The inline magnets / filters that I've seen HPS5 & HPS6 go into the back of the gearbox, where the oil pickup tube blanking plate is normally located.
Whereas the 'oil priming plug' is on the back of the block - there are actually two - one in each direction, originally there for blanking off the access points used for drilling the galleries I think.

It was a long time ago.. but I'm sure it went into the block..
I think it came from Minispares...
Oil pickup blanking plate??? Where is this?
Cheers, Ian

Thanks for that... its been so long since I was down there ... although, I don't think I ever noticed it.

Re: Oil plug priming.?
Has anyone seen a simple idea for adding a filter at this point ?
Bit simplified, but maybe, blocking oil way, drill and tap another hole, and have two metal pipes leading round engine to a another filter.
Either keep or lose existing filter ?

The only one I've seen took feed from the oil pick up pipe mounting plate on the back of the gearbox via a remote filter and then back into the block via either the primer drilling or via a new drilling in the back of the block.
Oil feed between box and block obviously blanked off.

Re: Oil plug priming.?
It's only a very small hole, just a shade over 1/4". The Pick-up Pipe under it is 5/8", so there wouldn't be much Oil Flow through it.Exminiman wrote:Has anyone seen a simple idea for adding a filter at this point ?
