Gearbox rebuild companies
I’m looking to get a close ratio 4 synchro box rebuilt for my S. I have a 22G 1128 close ratio box that I bought “rebuilt” many years ago but without diff and housing. I have now purchased a bare 22G 1128 casing complete and wanted to build the gear set into that casing replacing anything that needs replacing to give me a reliable box.
Any recommendations for the best companies out there for gearboxes please? Has to be done properly as I don’t want to have to pull it out after a few miles!
Cheers,
Paul

Not used them myself as I've rebuilt my own but people recommend Guessworks

Has anyone used a Chris at Crafted Classics?

Just looked at Crafted Classics, maybe an option Graham. I’d also thought about Southam Mini and Metro Centre but am told they’re pretty busy although I’m in no hurry...

SMMC know their way around a mini gearbox, no question. I have stood and watched a gearbox build. Careful and exacting are words that come to mind.

The popular and obvious ones are not always the best to run with. There's a lot of hype around some that is not at all deserved.
As well as SMMC and Crafted Classics, there's a good few on the members here on the forum that can do a fine job on them too.

Thanks for all the comments/advice. I think I may give SMMC a call and see what their waiting list is like.

There are a couple of good guides going around I did mine myself and it wasn’t too bad.

Same, long list of visual faults and pisses out oil. Wish I did it myself but didn’t really have the time.Andrew1967 wrote:I wasn’t overly impressed with the work standards.

Re: Gearbox rebuild companies
Build it yourself. A Mini gearbox is extremely simple to strip and rebuild, and an old Haynes manual is all you need.

Although not me personally.
He built the complete engine and box in Dave's car, here's a croaky voiced Dave.
