850 block + uprated cam equals??

Post by Vegard »

I've got a standard 850 I'm fitting an uprated head to. When at it, why not fit a SW5 camshaft as well. Has anyone done this without fitting cam bearings?

Cast iron is a good bearing material if well oiled. I have used 850 blocks without having line bored for additional bearings.
Study up on cams and spring pressures. The SW5 has high valve acceleration rate but not a great cam for high revs.
High revs and high spring rates are the concerns running in the block. My first race engine was a 850 and I had it
machined for three cam bearing. It turned to 8000 with 295 head with double springs. The last two 850s I built
were for Mokes and did not get extra bearing. I did use MG Metro cams and single valve springs. Steve (CTR)

Great advice. I’m thinking of using a Piper 255 or an MG Metro or similar. Sw5?

Find a huge 295 and build the engine ;)

255 and conical springs.
They will give the right amount of seat pressure, but lower 'over the nose' than conventional springs.
