Starter cable route?
Does anyone have a decent picture showing how the cable runs from the solenoid to the starter? Is it just a very short direct run or does it dress down next to the starter motor? I believe it is the upper terminal of the solenoid to the starter in this picture.
Also any pics of the route the battery cable takes coming up from the subframe to the input terminal of the solenoid would be good to see.

Re: Starter cable route?
I know it comes up to the starter terminal from below and has an elbow type connection.
First underside pic I can find - not perfect but a good start?

Re: Starter cable route?
Thanks for the picture. I think I have the battery cable routed pretty much like that picture shows but I am curious if the battery cable was routed between the block and starter to get to the solenoid or does it come around the front of the starter? I wish I had detailed pictures of an original car. They are hard to come by...

It comes up the front of the engine, not between block and starter.
Don't forget there is a bracket on the starter to solenoid connection to the top bolt of the starter motor

Re: Starter cable route?
I have an old tatty but unmolested 64 in a lockup. If I don't see it resolved here I'll do my best to get a pic from the top and send details

Re: Starter cable route?
That is the original solenoid to starter lead. The starter end of the cable has a right angle terminal that extends around the rear edge of the starter with a heat shrunk covering. The solenoid end of the cable has a standard terminal which has a fitted rubber boot for protection (fitted later in this case).
Hope this helps. Willy.

Re: Starter cable route?
I don't have this bracket. Are there any additional details regarding this? I am told I have the correct solenoid bracket for my car (64 1275 S). Looks like the starter cable just runs across the front of the starter then.smithyrc30 wrote:It comes up the front of the engine, not between block and starter.

Re: Starter cable route?
I always thought the extra 2-hole cable bracket [1K1977] came later, when the solenoid was moved from the transfer housing to the inner wing? It’s to stop the Mk3+ longer cable chafing on the edge of the housing when the engine rocks.

This jogged my memory so I went through one pile of old stuff and found this:
It has a right angle connector on one end but it seems a bit longer than the one you show in the picture. I suspect it is original to this car though so I will see how to neatly dress the cable.
Your picture was a big help...
Thanks
Gary

Re: Starter cable route?
After a bit of tweaking to match some old pictures I found, here is what I wound up with.
Nice and neat using original parts...You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: Starter cable route?
I think it should be longer and held in place by the following which attaches to the bottom starter bolt

That part only applies to the automatic.Oneball wrote:I think it should be longer and held in place by the following which attaches to the bottom starter bolt

Re: Starter cable route?
That bracket wasn't used on the Mk1 S. I'm guessing they used the same length cable as on the 850 etc which makes it seem a bit too long for the early S's with the different solenoid bracket used to stop the solenoid terminals shorting out on the wire coil inside the heater intake tube. The cable length should be 11.5"

Re: Starter cable route?
Rats, mine is 9.5 inches... I guess I need to make a new one but it will be tricky to salvage that right angle boot.

Everything Bob does is meticulously worked out and considered, so every bit gets fitted and checked... I for one was rather impressed when I was lucky enough to see this car!Gary Schulz wrote:Rats, mine is 9.5 inches... Just a thought, not sure of the year of your car, but given the picture, could the early ones have a shorter cable?

My Cooper had that bracket when I got it 25 years ago always assumed it was correct.

Re: Starter cable route?
My first car 850 1967 had one, and the next one, a 65 1275 S also had one. All the minis I have had since have been later than 65 and have all had one, so I assumed it was always there.Oneball wrote:360gts wrote:That part only applies to the automatic.Oneball wrote:I think it should be longer and held in place by the following which attaches to the bottom starter bolt
