Crackle Effect Powder Coating
Has anyone had this done as an alternative to paint ?. It's for a steel rocker cover.

Re: Crackle Effect Powder Coating
Yes - The crackle finished parts I sell are all powder coated - I think it is a better finish than paint and is a bit tougher. Not done a rocker cover though

Thanks Gordon. I wasn't too keen on painting it so would like to try this.

Yes I've had a few rocker covers done alone with heater fronts and ears, done properly you should get a nice even texture. At the place I use its about the same price it would cost me to do it myself with spray cans.

We have a chap locally but don't think he does crackle.
He's mad as a box of frogs, I came out of there once with a pair of slippers for the wife's Xmas present....!

Re: Crackle Effect Powder Coating
Found a local place, they said they don't do crackle finish but will do textured. I'm assuming it's the same thing different name. I'll go in to see if they have any samples.

No it is different - textured is like a fine lumpy finish (like there is dust in the paint)111Robin wrote:Found a local place, they said they don't do crackle finish but will do textured. I'm assuming it's the same thing different name. I'll go in to see if they have any samples.

Might be ok for a rocker cover, I'll see if they have samples first.Catmint wrote:No it is different - textured is like a fine lumpy finish (like there is dust in the paint)111Robin wrote:Found a local place, they said they don't do crackle finish but will do textured. I use Midas Touch too, luckily they are local to me. The place is like a bomb site and they seem very chaotic but they churn out very good work, the restoration job they did on my D1 alloys is first class. I think I have a crackle black rocker cover kicking about in the garage they did, I'll take a snap over the weekend.

Re: Crackle Effect Powder Coating
My local powder coater doesn't have the crackle finish product so I just opted for satin black instead. I'll maybe have another one crackled at some time.

Neither did mine , but they can all get it from there suppliers. I persuaded him to get some and he soon recuped his outlay as his sinse done several mini parts etc111Robin wrote:My local powder coater doesn't have the crackle finish product so I just opted for satin black instead. Re: Crackle Effect Powder Coating
I did tell him it was a very common finish, showed him photos etc. but he didn't seem interested. Alloy wheels seems to be their big earner and I guess not many would want black crackle 22" rims on their SUV, not gaudy enough !. If the satin finish is naff I'll widen my search locally, there must be someone willing to buy the materials.Nick W wrote:Neither did mine , but they can all get it from there suppliers. Re: Crackle Effect Powder Coating
Do what I did with the wiper motor casings Robin ....
1 - Leave it on a house radiator to get nice and warm
2 - Take into garage and paint it
3 - Bring it straight back inside and go over it for a few minutes with a hairdryer (preferably an old one - not the wife's brand new one - or you'll end up buying another new one
)
4 - Stick back on top of warm radiator on something that doesn't matter if you get paint on.
5 - Let it dry .... the crackle normally takes good effect after half an hour or so.
Best to do it when the wife is out

Thanks Andrew, unfortunately I don't have central heating, just a storage heater that I rarely use. Sources of heat are scarce. My neighbour has all singing all dancing heating systems, i can just see his face when i ask if i can stick a dripping rocker cover on one of his radiatorsAndrew1967 wrote:Do what I did with the wiper motor casings Robin ....
