Cleaning a Cooper S block

Hi folks. I know some of you are avid racers/engine builders on here and I was after some advice. I have decided to rebuild my 1275 S lump which has stood for the last 30 years. It isn't actually in terrible condition bore wise save for the bronze hammerite the original owner decide to treat it to. My question is what is the best way to prepare a block? I would like to ensure that oil galleries and waterways are clear and rust free. I would also like to paint the block and have a feeling acid won't remove it. Cheers. Mark

get an engine reconner to run it through the cleaning tank is the easy option (and good for your lungs!)

it will come back like a new born baby

Thanks Rich. Any specific type of gunge tank you can recommend or are they all the same?

Stick it in the dishwasher with 2 aldi dishwasher tabs, it will
Come out super clean

Bolt it to a gearbox, fit the head, rocker and tappet covers, all bolts and flywheel cover and get it grit blasted - you build it all up to keep the grit out. Then drill out one of the oil gallery plugs and use a long drift to knock the other one out - you cannot get the oil galleries 100% clean with the plugs in. When refitting the plugs, I used to use a small chisel to 'stake' the edges of the block over to the plugs can't come out again.

We can get the block as clean as a new one inside and out , including all of the water jacket .

Can also machine and supply race type screw in oil gallery plugs to replace the brass ones.

1) bare block
2) head casting
3) empty gearbox casing
