Refitting engine steady bar...

Post by Guywilko »

Cooper 998. Took the steady bar off to investigate a bulkhead clonky sound.

All is well with the steady bar, bushes, bolts. The bulkhead bolt is now only finger tight

Engine is sitting 4mm too far back for front steady bolts to go in.

i have obvs tried rocking the engine forward but can only get 1mm movement.

I have loosened the engine mount bolts to subframe and LCB steady bracket to differential and the single bolt at the back of the remote housing that holds the back end of the remote up.

Still cant move engine more than a couple of mm

Any tips please? Guy

Jacking the engine slightly usually lets the mounts rotate. You could also slacken the four remote bolts but I’m surprised there’s not something jamming, is the exhaust manifold against the floor/bulkhead or the lip of the subframe? That could also explain your clonk.

Could it be the steering rack?

As has been already suggested, I would loosen but not remove the four bolts at the front of the remote to the diff housing and pull the remote down slightly.
you should then be able to get the steady bolts in and retighten everything.
I find I have to do that every time.
