Clutch change

Post by Southwest »

The clutch has started slipping on my June 1960 Austin.
Looking at mini spares and other suppliers website they don't seem to list replacement parts for pre 1964.
I'd appreciate any info and recommendations for I'm assuming complete clutch assembly. I think the rear oil seal needs replacing as well.. a little oil drips from the jiggle pin.
Thanks in advance.

On my 62 when I had clutch slip it was oil contamination from the wet crank, I just reused the clutch cover with coil springs, fitted a front hub seal I think it was to replace the worn one and then used a new plate, been fine. I also re used the backing plate. Just cleaned everything with brake cleaner.

Having stripped the clutch and de greased everything I'm ready to fit a replacement red oil seal.
According to "anatomy of the classic mini " there should be an oil seal in my flywheel.1960 spring clutch... there's definitely a space for one but no sign of a seal. The chap at minispares advised there isn't one available??
Any input from the knowledge base appreciated.

Many cars of the period were converted to dry crank by plugging the oil hole in the crank with a brass pin and filing it off, then fitting the self lubricating deva bushes. In that case no separate oil seal is required on the flywheel. If you do need one, somerford list it as 22A325

I'm not sure if mine has been converted but just seen Bull Motif list hub oil seal as also fitting early flywheel.
