F*%^*g Exhaust fumes coming in car

Ive tried bloody everything to stop the fumes getting in the car, had the exhaust on and off and on, sealed, pressure tested for leaks, welded a small pin hole up but still the fumes get in - any ideas guys before i gass my self

My first thought is..... is the tail pipe long enough ?

Tail pipe is , well the exhaust is a maniflow works type with upturned tail and the tail pipe sticks out about 2inch behind the rear bumper, ive pulled it out as far as i can,,,,boot seals a good idea tho - ill have a look at the squishyness of it.

Thats an upswept centre exit then ? The most likely to cause this. Why not stick a temporary extension on to prove a point.
Its surprising how gasses are sucked back in if the pipe is short.

Or you could just leave it as is and after a while it won't bother you any more

On a serious note, I think the comments above have probably hit the nail in the head, I have only ever had 1 upswept centre exit pipe & that used to stink too.

I once had a cracked exhaust manifold which gave these symptoms.

The crack didnt open up unless it was on load - engine hot/moving a bit on the mounts - so couldnt tell when what it was when it was sat on the drive.

Didnt track it down until I gave up searching and replaced the whole system.

well half the boot seal is spot on, the other half is somewhere else !!!

theres no seal at all along the bottom edge so ill try that route first

I've got a car that also suffers from fumes and has a upswept exhaust, I was thinking of using a later Rover seal on the body lip as there is no way of mounting a seal to the bootlid as it is a single skin, it's not pleasent to drive long distances

I too have a single, centre exit stainless RC40 and have been noticing an increase in fumes since fitting it during my resto. I'm pretty sure the joints are all good and the manifolds are tight and undamaged. The boot seal is new but is the harder type so I was thinking of changing that but reading the other comments about centre exits makes me think it could be that.

I've noticed you can alter the fume levels depending on which sliding windows you have open, so that must be affecting the flow of air into and around the car.

Good idea to try an extension on the tail pipe. I notice from period pics of the works cars that they seem to have a very long centre pipe, so maybe that's the trick?

Anyone else with a smelly centre exit!?

New seal - No smell (well only the slightest of whiff) with all combination of windows open - only thing now is my boot lid dont shut properly !!!

I think ill go get a rover type seal

I have a centre upswept exhaust. It doesn't leak. I get fumes in the car only when the windows are open, there are no fumes at all when the windows are closed. I've extended the length of the tailpipe and it made no difference.
The amount of fumes gassing me seems to be dependant on the speed of the car and wind direction. I am guessing that the centre tailpipe is the cause here and if it was side exit I would have no problem?
Are side exit pipes generally better ?
