997 camshaft urgent ID question

Post by max-o-matic »

Hi guys, I am looking for a cooper 997 camshaft (part number 2A 948) and have found one advertised as genuine, but it shows TWO rings instead of one which would indicate according to the Vizard bible that it comes out of either a sprite or a midget..
the seller assures me it came straight out of his 997 and that it's genuine, so my question is this: is there anyway bmc would grind camshafts on whatever blanks they found? can this be the real deal?
thanks for letting me know, this is pretty urgent...

difficult one this. I was sold one of those assured that it was a 997 cooper in the early 80s. I would also be interested to know exactly what I've got! :geek:

2 rings indicate the 998 Cooper,AEA630 if memory serves. The 997 has 1 ring and more lift and duration than the 998.

If its the 998 Cooper cam, memory says its the same spec as the 1100 cam. So you won't be revving the engine much. The 997 cam is slightly wildehotter (?) than the 510 S cam, bit more opening on the inlet from memory. Good cam for the road btw.

well Vizard's bible doesn't mention the 998 cooper even though EAE630 is in there, guess he forgot to add it.. but thanks for the info, my seller must've thought he had a 997 when he really had a 998, unless someone already swapped out his good cam for this meh cam...

does anybody have the "timing value" (XY degree after TDC #1 inlet) for the AEA630 camshaft?
