Just to confirm - the original sound proofing was half an inch in the boot - but no sound proofing on the parcel shelf at all.

It’s stuck on the under side of the parcel shelf out of sight...

HOY had thick sound proofing stuck to the underside of the rear parcel shelf.

Also has soundproof strips cut and laid in between the headlining framework AND further material stuck to the underside of the roof.

It is my understanding that the thicker cotton/felt pads and Lizard skin products perform 2 different functions when it comes to sound deadening.
The spray on and stick on pads and linings will cut down on the mechanical acoustic transmissions, from vibrations, drumming etc. The thicker paddings will help muffle/absorb the "airbourne" acoustical transmissions, engine noise, road noise etc. These products are designed to work together. Modern cars are a great example of how these products are used in conjunction with each other. I imagine the felt used in the BINI is located in a spot that wouln't be susceptible to water ingress. I am betting it would be a closed cell foam under the carpets etc.

Interesting point, and that very much makes sense. The spray-on stuff adds mass to the panels, so they don't "ring" when vibrating (or tapping them, for that matter), but wouldn't stop engine/intake noise. I must admit that I purchased the thick padding as well, and will fit both under the carpets (plus all the normal sound deadening in the bulkhead, bonnet, etc.) Should cut down a fair bit of noise, I'd imagine..

Mine is a late 62 car - so not insulation in the boot?

A peek and a feel suggest the same, with the exception of the parcel shelf. This car has hardly been touched since new and I am reluctant to pull it apart any further. It has a genuine 33K miles on it with every journey logged - as found under the back seat with all the petrol costs too!

Seems to be no hard and fast rule to some sections Andy.

I had never seen soundproofing 'on' the headlining before, just fixed to the roof.

Although HOY had been f***ed about with mechanically, bodily (save for the flip front) and trim-wise it was pretty original.

Just been looking at the brocade rear shelf that was taken out of my car back in the late 70s. The dirt marks from the speaker holes suggest no sound proofing on that one either??

Morning all,
Having a bit more spare time on my hands I have decided to start some sound deadening / proofing. Reading through many posts i have come to the thought of:
For the rear bulkhead behind the rear seat, rear quarter panels, door panel and roof to use:

Hi all.
On this subject, does anyone know what the material is stuck on the centre rail of both headlining frames from front to rear as shown on photo?

The strips are 1/8" thick x 2" wide.

It's felt and it's meant to aid the headlining to slide in when it's fitted

Would any body have pictures of original under bonnet insulation, the press release photo page on the main site has this one listed for a 997



However I was always under the assumption that they were made out of one piece. I recently removed a one piece sound deadening mat from my 61 however am now in doubt if it would be the correct material. I do need to mention that I'm referring to a UK built car.
