LUCAS WIPER MOTOR I.D. CODES

Post by Chewie Baker »

Has anyone got a list of how to decipher the 5 digit Lucas codes stamped on DR3A wiper motor covers?

I believe 75541 is the usual number used for Mk1 minis

is it a case of other numbers were used for other BMC cars?

Ive also noticed the 5 digit number is also sometimes followed by a letter 'A' or 'B'

any info would be much appreciated

thanks - Martin

Earlier non-parking DR3A's were numbered 75461

Over the years the part number for the wiper motor changed ever so slightly, there were revisions which Lucas did and then added the letters at the end of the part numbers. The rule of thumb is that the further along the letter in the alphabet the newer, or further refined the motors are.
Different years did have different part numbers on the motor covers (from what I can recall), however I can check for you when I get home

If you look at the Lucas parts list on the main site

http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.u ... c-1964.pdf

You will see that DR3A is the "Model Number" this remains the same throughout an items life.

Then there is the "Part Number" 75444B for example.

And as Toby says this is sometimes ended with another letter A, B, C etc. This seems to be a minor revision to the Lucas part Number.

Remember that there would also be a BMC Part Number 14A5892 in the example of the wiper motor. As well as a number of other BMC Part numbers for various parts that were available separately.

According to my 1965 'BMC' Lucas reference book , Mini non parking DR3A's are numbered 75541A and obviously, as said, 'B etc is a revision.

75461 is not listed but may well be an earlier number.

Not entirely convinced by this list not the least because export numbers could well be different but from a few Lucas application listings and the factory original book:

1959 75380 DR2 (Maybe export?)
1959 75315D DR2
1960 75385A DR2
1960-61 75385B DR2
1961-62 75585B/D DR2
1962-65 75461A DR3A
1965-66 75541A DR3A
1967 75541B DR3A
1968 75456D DR3A
1968 75450D DR3A

Later Mk2's and MK 3's etc. were then type 14W.

Wiper sweep apparently changed from 130 to 120 at the end of 1963 so clearly 75461A's would appear to come with both depending on date...

75450D has a 150 degree sweep and is for Austin A110 and Morris Minor 1000.

Many of our restored self park DR3A's started life as Morris Minor and had 150 deg sweep as Per says. With Peter Laidler's expert help we are able to fit 120's to them.

Hi, anyone knows in what point of 1960 the codes changed from 75385A to 75385B?

I’m trying to figure out what type of motor my car should have. It’s a July 1960 Austin seven .

Sorry for hijack this post :)

Regards
Emilio
