22G846 Gearbox ?

...Many seem to dismiss the 22G846 box as being just Elf / Hornet but as I'm sure you are aware Alan at least some of the examples fitted to early 1300cc ADO16's

Pulling on an old thread, but I've come across these remote gearboxes on two Mini's here in USA recently.

One is on my 1967 Mk1 S (not the original box, should be a 333), and the other is on a 1972 Austin Mini 1000 Super Deluxe which I think is original to the car. Note: Both have Mini style diff, not ADO16 sandwich plate.

I am curious for how different the 22G1128 and 22G846 gearboxes really are - for example are the internals common between both, with just 'cosmetic' variations such as ribs/strengtheners in the alloy casting itself?

It seems like both gearboxes were being used by BMC across their model range from 1967 onwards with several years of overlap, rather than rationalising to a single part.

Just wondering if there was any reasoning to that - for example was it BMC practice to allocate a different part number to differentiate first vs second source of casting suppliers? Could this be a marque thing - Cowley vs Longbridge? etc.

The 22G1128 and 22G846 gearboxes internals are common between both, both are 4 syncro.

If there are any differences between these two casings they are very subtle.

I bought one recently and refurbished it for an S engine I am building. It come with a ME laygear (close ratio) 4 synchro as other have suggested. I changed the diff and output shafts for the hardy spicer variants. Nice box.

I can't say with certainty here, however, I believe that the primary supplier of the Gearbox Castings were from Birmingham Aluminum Company and these were supplemented by castings from Stirling Metals Limited.

I'm just wondering if these may have been supplied by the latter and the more common cases from the former?

It would seem the 22G846 casing was also used for early Rod type boxes. In this case the box is fitted with the pre Pot type drive shaft couplings, the selector rod holes are not machined and something like the later Rod type rear is attached. No photo in the listing but presumably the bottom of the case is machined to take the Rod type gear change mechanism? Couple of pictures - there are more on ebay :-

I bought an 846 box from Dave (spoon450) on the forum for my new Downton motor. It’s a cracking gearbox with mini remote change not ADO 16, definitely 4 synchro and really smooth.

WYF = West Yorkshire Foundries. I think it was a BMC subsidiary rather than a 3rd party supplier.
I have a box with SM = Stirling Metals.
