Quarter light rubber challenge

Can anyone advise how to fit the quarter light rubber on a MK1? I’ve managed to install the rubber but the window hinge looks like it might bust when trying to close. The rubber is from Phoenix supplies. All the other stuff i’ve had seems ok apart from door window dynasty which I’ll start another thread on. Advice welcomed.

I have tried the mini spares one and have same problem, my old ones are unusable so not sure what to do next, was considered good trying mk3 ones cut down, although incorrect pattern inside may work.

The tapered section on the Phoenix seals is too thick, I had similar issues on my Mk2. The ones sold by Minispares were better in this respect. You might still need to cut out some sections to allow the hinges to sit over the rubber correctly.

Didn't someone do an article with a photo showing a natty little gadget hge'd made to accurately trim the thicklness of the rubber to make it fit the rear side windows. If I was computer literate I'd find it. But, alas...........

Yes, they used a dremel drill with grinder wheel to take off some of the profile ... I just can’t imagine doing that myself, besides I don’t own a dremil :-)

No Dremel ? .. best write to Father Christmas as you are going to need one or two as they dont last that long .

The Phoenix ones are totally useless the wedge is far too thick & will break the hinges is the window is closed. I bought a set on recommendation on here & chucked them away. TOTAL RUBBISH!

I replaced them with the current Minispares ones and although these are still "tight" they are perfectly acceptable to me. I used a bit of WD40 to help to bed them down & now, 6 months or so after fitting them, they look really good.

Complete opposite for me with Phoenix - perhaps they've changed the tooling?

About 1.5 years ago I fitted a pair of their SRS 127 seals to my Mk2 with zero issues. The material is soft, looks correct & seals well in wet weather + both windows now open and close as they should. Couldn't be happier.

A prior owner had used 'budget' Mk3+ quarter light seals which were hard and lumpy + made both windows difficult to close and put unneeded strain on the window frames.

Had the same problem with the MS ones, replaced with ones from Somerford and they were much better.

With the way that the "good" rear quarter rubbers seem to swap around the suppliers with such regularity, I suspect that they all get them from the same place & the supplier's QC is at fault.

Don't get me started on Phoenix, the boot rubber they supply is to thick to shut the lid!

I’ve just had the Minispares rubbers delivered for the quarter light and the profile is much smaller than the Phoenix ones so hopefully they’ll be the ticket. I’ve got the boot rubber from Phoenix and will be looking for a refund! Will post the cross section of the quarter light rubber.

I bought both the MiniSpares (Mini Mania/Seven Ent) and Phoenix and neither are any good at all. I do remember one was absurdly too thick (probably the Phoenix one) and the other was also just too thick hence I had to make up a silly milling contraption to help me thin them out.

These and the boot lid seals really make restorations a pain...

They do.

I have had issues with Quarter light seals in recent years, but the current Minispares ones are fine.

Boot seals have always been a pain in the arse when new, even when I used to get them from Leyland in the 1980's. The current offering from MS is certainly no worse. Once fitted & the boot is closed for the first time they bed in nicely.

Door seals were terrible at one time, but are excellent now, biggest issue is making sure they are fitted during restoration as this is often overlooked during the welding stage, when fitting straight to an original car they do sometimes need a bit of trimming down the front edge. But have you seen how squashed & misshapen the originals are!!!!

I have a roll of original rubber i have been using it for years windows close perfect not sure how much i have left may be enough to do about ten cars i might sell some.

I have now had too many poor experiences with quarter light seals for this to be just "bad luck". I have purchased multiple copies from multiple vendors hoping it was some lot code issue but none are good. It would appear that many others are seeing the exact same thing so something doesn't make any sense here...

I have a couple pictures of a beautifully restored mk1 S that I saw a week ago at the local British Car Festival. Everything about the car was first class and no expense spared except when I looked at the quarter lights, I saw the hinge piece was bent because of the strain put on it and the window is being forced out so it will not sit flush with the car. Apparently I am not the only one seeing this issue based on what I see on this forum and at various shows etc... These parts are rubbish.

Ok, not my experience or that of loads of people who have managed to fit new rubbers to their cars without too many issues. Good luck in your hunt for the perfect replacement.

Ok, the MS rubber is in and the windows shut and seal reasonably well. I say reasonably as it’s still tight and not sitting as squarely as i’d like ... perhaps it’s me. Anyhow i’ve cut section of both brands and you can see the problem with Phoenix version!
