Is it an Aussie shell?
That's a breather for the fuel pump that goes inside the car to stop it inhaling loads of red dust.
I thought they were only fitted to Aussie spec cars.

1965 is as late as I have gone so far. I have a late 66 awaiting resto (Almond Green one
) I'll have a look & see if that has one.

Re: whats this pipe for
My 66 Cooper has it, my 67 850 as well, and my 68 Cooper Mk2 as well
I will check the 997 tonight,
The little plastic intake is very hard to find if you don't have it

Re: whats this pipe for
My September 64 had one (and still has).
It was used when the vented fuel pumps (to let air escape preventing a stiff spring acting behind the diaphragm) were introduced to avoid dirt/water enter the pump, as Mark has said.

Fitting it after the rear subframe can be quite a challenge!

Would have continued till the electric pump was replaced by a mechanical one, around early mid 70s. maybe mid 73....
