whats a good road rally brake pad

Post by pad4 »

Got green stuff green on my S discs (grooved) at the moment and they inspire no confidence at all, rather like the old M171s feel first thing in the morning

Who makes a decent grippy brake pad these days

the guy from minispeed recomended the red stuff pads when i bought some s discs. i've not fitted them yet so cant comment on the feel of them. i think they might need a good warm up first though like the 171's.

My 1071 rally car had carbon metallic pads in, superb. Later i went to EBC red stuff and they were very good. I've put M1144's in the orangebox, not impressed and it's lighter and less powerfull than 'S'. :o

IMO the Green stuffs are worse than std pads,

I have used 1144's on the road on S discs and like them, but I'd imagine you could cook them up racing, in fact I have had them fade on the road,

I am also currently using 1144's on a mini with BIG 10.25" discs, they are really good on this size exept if the ambient temp gets down near freezing, then they just dont work on the first press, scary!

Pagid do a number of different materials with differing coefficients of friction , talk to John Freeth at Performance Braking of Monmouth. If you fit a pad with a higher co efficient of friction on the front you will need to check if you can increase the rear wheel cylinder diameter in order to keep the balance optimal . ie not to much front bias

Ill gihave a look at the padgids - have fitted the 1/2 bore rear cylinders and a tilton screw bias adjuster so ive got room to play with the rears - dont know what it is with the green stuffs, i just dont get 'THE' feel for them.

Does FERODO still make mini pads or has he gone off filming the HOBBIT instead

Have you looked at Carbon Lorraine pads?

They're expensive but are the cats pyjamas by all accounts, and come in various compounds from to road to race. Have just bought a set myself for the racer.

Apparently they're fantastic from cold and even better when hot!

Interesting thread. I've put my S back on the road with grooved discs and EBC Greens and they are rubbish!
They seem to be too hard a compound for road/hillclimb.
Are the red stuff softer?

Is it possible to have too much front bias on a Mini?

Yes .... In order to minimise stopping distance and energy absorption then you need to have the rears doing as much work as possible but not locking before the fronts or you will end up with instability. If you carry forward the logic of having no braking on the rears then energy absorption on the fronts will be higher and fade will be more of an issue.

Clear??

Got to be honest gent's, I have run green stuff on quality solid discs with a servo for some time now. I like the fact they didn't require too much warming up and the bite was pretty consistant. I swapped to yellow stuff and again, equally impressed. Maybe its the vented/grooved disc's?

I gather you gave them chance to bed in (say around 100 miles)?

And this is in a rally weight mini that I have a tendancy to "press on a bit" with.

Mintex were awfull, despit bedding them in properly (phased braking and allowing to cool down)

Carbon Mets are great, but they eat disc's and kill alloys. Not to mention they sound bloody awful!!

Maybe we are all a little used to modern stuff!!

My comment was the opposite - they feel like they haven't got much bite and feel a bit 'cold'. I was hoping red stuff would be better from cold, but reading the site they look to be a bit harder.

Hmm, mixed reports then (well just me fighting the EBC corner, and no, I don't work for them!!)

I wonder if my servo allows me to get the pressure up to get the temp right??

I'm honestly impressed by them. I once tried padgid in the same set up...I struggled with them.

I had the greens in for a few thousand miles,

I found they had not bite and I could fade them pretty easily,

I have to say I agree. I only have 7in discs, but I found the greenstuff to be good. But then there are so many variables it is difficult to compare people's experiences.

I,ve used green stuff pads on four fifferent cars albeit a few years ago now. 997 Cooper rally car, 7" discs ( excellent :o :!: :?: ) Skoda Felicia ,transformed the car , solid discs excellent, and a 2000my Fiesta, excellent again. Green stuff i've tried recently has been rubbish ( same car Fiesta) and the M1144's in the orangebox are very average :| Carbon metallics going in for my next event. We will see. ;)

I agree completely, I've had mixed results with Green Stuff. I have used them on a road going mini with 8.4 brakes and a servo about 5 years ago with great results, 10 years ago on a lotus 7 with grooved discs again with great results, 5ish years ago on a Lotus Elise with EBC drilled and grooved discs and I was very disappointed! On my S with grooved discs no servo and 7.5inch discs I am distinctly underwhelmed. I'll give them another 100 miles then try something else.

green stuff do seam to suffer with consistancy problems, its certainly something we found when running them on mighty minis.

carbon metallics would be my choice, but they must be run on a solid disc for best results, and the compound must be choosen to suit the event/weight of car as there are different compounds avalible - not all of them eat the discs
please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares

For road use I just use the standard pads & have never had a set fade on me. For HARD driving I'd go Carbon Metalic as they just don't fade.
