Wood & Picket Info

Post by mk1 »

After Gregor kindly sent me a copy of the W&P flier he got with his friends latest purchase I am wanting to do a W&P section on the main MK1 site.

If anyone has any information or documents on this company that they would be happy to share with the world & would be grateful to hear from you.

Thanks,

Mark F.

Good luck with that Mark,

Wood and pickett info is pretty hard to get your hands on and people that do have it dont like to part with it! It would be fantastic to have a section on W&P as there great cars. We do have a W&P boff on here and im sure he would be able to help you out!

Also i think it would be good idea to make a database of known wood and pickett cars too, as they went into liquidation so many times that everytime they where taken over they distroyed all the paperwork (so i was told) This could explain why there is so little to be found out there about them. I have one to add to your list if you decided to make a list.

You only need to take one to bits to realise why there isnt many of them about anymore!

I remember buying a Wood and Pickett Mk3 Cooper S project many years ago , I'll see I can find any photos of it. I belonged to some Arab Sheikh originally.

Somewhere I have a W&P brochure for the Sheer Rover. I'll try and dig it out.

It has all sorts in it - SD1 styled fronted Range Rovers and military conversion IIRC

I was fortunate enough to accompany my Dad when he was invited to their stand at the motorshow one year (1977?)

- they had a 6 wheel Range Rover with seats that elevated so that its owner could tend his falcons !! As a youngster, that just blew my mind.

Was that range rover blue ??

I have recollection of one of the car mags featuring a six wheel range rover project, though i suppose it could have been based on the wp one.

I can't honestly remember - but I don't think it was blue.

I know it had a highly personal yellow/beige interior - very 70's. Also had a very long sunroof with a chrome bar across the width of the roof for the birds to perch on

At the time there were a few companies offering 6-wheel conversions. IIRC the W&P offering was also 6-wheel drive which some of the others weren't

Hi Surf :) thanks for the kind thought.

Thats the one Chad Wilkins have for sale.
I send him some W&P info, to "spice up" the ad, as he didnt know much about W&P.
It is one very nice & unmolested car 8-)
only the wrong wheels stand out, but thats easy to take back to original spec.

Yes W&P registred ALL cars.

I have spoken to people, who have actually had this perm in their hands (with pictures of MY car) just imagine how frustrated I am, to know this

All was lost when Henly,s ( ) took over in 1986

No chance for Bulee I'm afraid Jens. I spoke to the first owner of the car on the phone tonight who's really excited about it and is going to be key in getting some of the detail right. He's already confirmed that all the interior bits are right. It is quite unusual as it's the 'early' Margrave so there's not that many cars around to use for reference.

I may get the vinyl roof refitted and would be interested to know if anyone still specialises in this in the UK ?!

well if you want it authentic, make sure if your de-seaming the rear end you put the vinyl straight over the metal work and dont bother with that paint stuff! and use a good new sharp cutting blade when fitting the vinyl to get the marks in the roof paint so it gives it the best chance to rust! its ok because the vinyl will hide this! hahaha  thats what i found out!

just get a good trimmer to make you one up and stick it on? im guessing yours hasnt been de-seamed?

Yes it's deseamed and the conversion was done in 1971. I've got some work to do as the top padded section of the dash is missing presumed disposed of , I've seen a similar one on a GT that looked pretty fragile compared to the later dashes so I assume it split. They used to hammer the switch carrier surround part of the lower dash rail flat in order to take a fabricated steel(?) box section which when padded then formed the lower part of the dash, housing the electric window switches. That fabricated section is missing also so if anyone out there has one to copy or the dimensions of one I'd be grateful.
The rear companion boxes used to be cut back and dressed into a box section also to enable fitment of those huge (and bloody heavy !) Recaro seats. Well mine's had a complete boot floor so those sections are missing also which I'd like to copy from another car if that's possible, so if there's anyone with a W&P Margrave who'd be willing to let me have a butchers at ?

Mine's had the front bulkhead cut as if to take a Weber but it's done I assume to gain access into the rear of the dashes ? What other cars were all the instruments from anyone know ? I did spot the switches for the windows looked like Lotus Elan.

is that any help? Thats a GT dash out of mine. Im going to re-do the dash eventually but im going to replace the bit of the dash that houses the dials with a wood section and some nicer period clocks. your right though as i removed it and its VERY fragile.. the quality unfortunatly isnt as nice as they look!
i'l also try root out the rear bins that have been converted as i removed them prior to desembling the car. So you can perhaps take some measurments from them? presuming they are the same bits your refering too? as mine doesnt have recaro seats

any photos of yours surf?
