They were used on late vans and pickups, never saw the hole on 60's or 70's stuff.

I can spot a flaw with this.

Did the vans have 'H.Houdini' on the side?

well there you go, learn something new everyday, let me check KEC, that's a good deterrent !

i never knew what the hole was for, but from my memory as an ex Rover / Austin parts boy, these were van doors, and the MK1 doors were superseded to this part number in the 70s, i think it was the only difference

I always thought that the hole appeared when the safety boss did so that you could poke the screwdriver though and fit the screw to the boss?

Not if any of th cars I have owned are anything to go by.

First one was a 67 Austin SDL, no holes, second a Morris Mk2 68, no holes.... etc.

The current 2 one late 69 Austin Mk2 and one 70 Morris Mk2 no holes and all are/were still on their original doors.

I always thought the hole was on van doors only. At least that was the way it appeared when wandering the scrap heaps of the early 80's

Just had a look at mine and it does have those slot things. BUT my doors were new doors from Leyland/Unipart in 1983/4 ish when I got them via my neighbour who worked there for cost plus 10%. I noticed the slot them. It doesn't even remotely align with the safety button thinggy. The bad/sad bit about the Unipart scheme was that the employee had to own the car before he could take advantage of the scheme. So a quick paper sale was arranged and I greedily took full advantage of it. Happy days here in Oxford

That would explain it if the number superseded to the van door for all cars, it would be because the van lasted the longest with external hinges and would have been the last manufactured door for stock purposes?

Can't see it cos the boss is further over than the hole. I did hear it was for an extra lock on the late vans, but then you'd only be able to fit one unless you exited the van via the back door?!

When breaking into Australian Minis with the wind-up windows the idea was to go in through the passenger side. It doesn't take long to press in the triangular quarter vent window, push a key or something in through the seal and flip its latch up, swivel open the window, then reach in and un-snib the lock. On the driver's side the door is locked with a key from the outside, so its moderately more difficult.
