I've read that some of these rims do fit over the S caliper, but did anyone get to th ebottom of which rims? later ones?
When I say standard rims, I mean stock steel rims (3.5, 145 tyres), not S steel rims.

I've used standard mini 3.5" rims on 's' brakes , should be no problem Dave.

Yeah I'm running S discs and 3.5in steels and they fit fine.
I've never come across any that didn't fit.

That's great, do they stick out miles on a standard shell, no arches?

Re: standard 10 inch rims over S calipers
In the olde days (1960s), I learned from experience that NO standard 3.5" rim would fit over S calipers. I remember sometime in the late 70s getting in a "discussion" with someone just as stubborn as I who insisted that ALL standard 3.5" rims would fit over S calipers. Turns out we were both wrong. I don't have wheel stamping numbers to quote, but the earliest rims (riveted and their immediate replacements) do not fit. At some later time, the wheels were modified slightly and will fit over most S calipers.
Recently, while looking for standardt 3.5" rims that would work with snow tires and my S brakes, I dragged about 30 rims off of the shelves and tried them all. Eight fit. The rest didn't.

Yes, this is what I read (I've not tried it in my defence). I worked out that some were saying that later rims would fit over certain types of S caliper. Apparently there have been 2 major designs and 1 of them does the trick.
