mk1 boot lid fitment....Heritage panel!

Post by Matty »

I managed to get hold of a heritage mk1 boot lid as it was easier (and a bargain price) than fixing my old one, but the fit is TERRIBLE! :x

Ive sorted the corners (on the corners out) lol. But it looks like it needs more of a curve in the whole panel?

Both of the verticle sides seem to sit 5-10mm proud of the rear panel!!

So far I have tried:

* tweaking the hinge rail to bring it in ( the bottom edge now lines up)
* tweaking the verticle edge to pull it in slightly, but now its starting to show a crease
* Ive played around with the plate that the lock pulls against (ends up maikng the verticle edges sit flush but the top is about 10mm in)

Any ideas/suggestion apart from binning the panel? Ideally if I could put more of a curve in it, it would be fine but I can't think of a way to do it without creasing it? :?

Cheers
Matt

Very true!

There must be a way for it to fit though.

I could always skim the rear quarters with 10mm of filler. :o

Very frustrating matt.
Is there any chance you can check the fit of the bootlid in another Mini.?
If it's the same poor fit on the other Mini then there's a good chance the bootlid is knacked.

Yes Matty, this is why I searched a long time, to find old/original BL items, for my car.

the fit is soo much better, as these were made, before the tools got worn.

I just wonder how the fit would be, if a body with doors & lids were orderd ?? anyone ??

My thoughts exactly...they must fit them to the heritage shells some how?

My old boot lid that I was in the middle of re-framing fitted really good, I may end up finishing that one off.

I'll get some pics up tomorrow for everyone to laugh at! :D

I suspect that its just a case of the bootlid not fitting, simple as that.

The biggest problem with Heritage is that they have the old BL mentality of pushing stuff out through the front door regardless of whether its correct or not. I have seen a lot of stuff that has been supplied wrong and heard about even more. They will ALWAYS deny liability & generally speaking, sending stuff back that is wrong, damaged or supplied incorrectly is impossible.

To be honest, short of covering the rear of your car with 10mm of filler as you jokingly suggest the easiest option will be to throw this new lid away & look for another one.

In general I would strongly suggest that if people do buy assembled units, particularly doors, boot lids & bonnets that they test fit them BEFORE painting to make sure they fit acceptably.

matt

are you sure it was a heritage boot, there was another make of mk1 boots that had '50p' corners - they where terrible.

the heritage ones are 50/50, they do normally take some fitting and have a lot of evidence of 'post production' in the surface (swirl marks from da's, pick marks etc etc, but the shape never seems to bad.
please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares

I can only confirm the above
when I restored my Black "thingie" I found out that BMH did new front bumpers 8-) yea nice 8-) so I ordered one from Somerford.
It came in a sealed BMH box, and when I opened it, did it have BOTH corner brackets welded on AFTER it had been chromed
I called Somerford, and they told me to send it back, and I would get a full refund,
but when they got it, they said they could not see any Blue welds ( more than 10 people in my workshop saw it )
and that I would not get a refund, for the postage, as they had promised

Needless to say I dont shop there anymore ;)
