I have what I thought is a 998 Cooper engine that I'm rebuilding to replace the 848 unit in my '62.
I've checked the engine number on line and it appear that, yes, it is indeed a 998 Cooper (9FD SA H****).
Now here's the query - it has obviously a remote gear change but the drive shafts are pot type rather than rubber couplings. Did BMC use the pot type drive shafts in the Coopers?
Drive shaft query??

That was our guess aswell - just odd that it has the remote box but with pot type shafts. If it had a rod change box I could have seen through it. Probably going to drop the block onto the 848's gearbox to retain the "magix wand", but was curious as we'd never come across it before.

We have a 'remote' box with pot joints ... but only because I built it up that way.
I'm sure loads of other people have to.

Both Rich (Guru) & I always (or should I say invariably) replace the original drive shaft arrangement on MK1's with the later pot joints. Its an easy swap & the later joints are much more reliable than the rubber crosses. I suspect that this is what someone has done in your case.

As indicated, real Coopers were long gone before the pot joints came along in 1973. I do agree that they are much nicer (and easier to work with) than the yoke-type.
