License Plate Question
How can you tell if your registration # is work something? I always see plates for sale on Fleabay and sometimes the price is out of this world. What dictates the starting asking price?

Re: License Plate Question
the brass neck of the seller, but ultimately it depends on the vanity and stupidity of the buyer.
seriously though, it seems to depend on whether the figures can be interpreted as having some meaning such as a name, or popular initials etc. or are very short, which seem to also command high values.
the shorter pre- 1963 plates which don't have the age related lettering are generally worth more I think.
Very mundane plates are often given high values by companies like 'regtransfers', but rarely do they find buyers. For example, they say that my camper's reg of AMS 70V is worth £1000???? funnily enough, no one else seems to share their view. I suspect a lot of sellers set their asking price based on 'valuations' from companies like this
of course, a lot of plates from the Abingdon area seem to have a VERY high value......

As Pandora says they are plenty of companies that will give you a valuation, but they are only intrested in you advertising your plate with them and always give inflated values.

But if the plate is worth something(proper money),they will make you a derogatory cash offer).surfblue63 wrote:If someone offers to buy it off you?62Countryman wrote:How can you tell if your registration # is work something?

Re: License Plate Question
one of these companies listed the plate 'V12 GTO' on their site at something like £1000. I thought there might be a profit in it, so enquired about it, but took it no further. Next time I looked, it was up at £3000.......
seems this is how they work - any interest increases the 'value'.
you can't fit a modern plate onto an older car, so it was only suited to a more recent vehicle, and I think it's on aFerrari specialists transit van now!

Never has a truer word been spoken!
My Scirocco reg is WVN24 I am both Vain & Stupid
Seriously though, when I built the racer I put the number on retention as it seemed pointless leaving it on the car it now acts as a nice reminder of my now departed racer.
