Remote to magic wand

Post by Thee Adder »

I want to get a bit more poke out of the 850 but I would want to keep the engine/box in its original state, contemplating fitting an 1098 I have sat in my garage, but I don't want to hack the floor about and was wondering if you can fit or adapt the remote change gear box to a magic wand, pudding stirrer etc..???

You could find another 850 (magic wand) gearbox and rebuild it to use with the 1100 engine.

If you wanted a to use a remote 3 or 4 sychro gearbox you'd have to swap the diff housing (which isn't the best option as they are line bored together) to fit the 850 housing to a different gearbox case. You might be lucky..

You can convert a 4 synchro remote change box to "direct change" as used on the commercials during the remote change era. The gearlever emerges from where the remote normally attaches behind the diff and enters the car in more or less the same spot as a magic wand box, without cutting the floor.

Its a simple job to change over the mechanism, but I'm not sure how hard it would be to get the necessary bits.

The 68 to 74 Mokes also had the same gearbox Tim has mentioned, only the later versions also have the outputs for the steel universals (similar to Autos and Cooper Ss).

The "pudding strirrer" ones look like in this link. They bolt on the bottom of the remote diff housing in place of the long alloy extension.

Just fit the 850 diff housing to the 1100 gearbox. Yes they are line bored but they rarely give trouble.

If you fit the 850 gearbox to the 1100 engine the connecting rods will hit the case, you need to either grind out the case or find a wide case 3 syncro box.

I have been collecting old AA four synchro remote type cases. Also there was a time when 850 magic wand boxes were free to a taker. I also machine the four synchro to accept A+ gear set with the right reverse gear. With enough cases and diff. housings select fit till close enough to work with. There are three planes to check, fit up and down , side to side and bearing bore dia. I have recently built one for a Moke project in a location where it can be driven year round. I'm torn between rebuilding my Moke as delivered or jazz it up a bit. When son Alex reaches college age it may have to go on the block and I'll need to get top dollar. Steve (CTR)

I've just measured about twenty gearboxes to do this, and this is NOT my experience. If you're going this direction, MEASURE PROPERLY!!!!!

Some need machining on all faces, some only need the gaskets removed.

I fully agree with this

best one I ever had was so out of shape that the diff bearings distorted and the diff wouldn't turn very well

I would not suggest it's as simple as all that. Knowing your way around a set of inside and outside mikes is a help. The last one I had to remove the gasket between housing and case and work the diff. housing on glass backed emery paper to get the bearing bores round. If you are willing to do the work it can be done. Steve (CTR)

I've actually done a few like this for Mokes. I've a few that clearly wouldn't work, but I've had more successes than misses.

First thing to do is to ditch the pin dowels. There are already two big dowels in there - the bearings.

The reason that the ones that wouldn't work didn't, was that the faces for the side flanges ended up with too much of a step, but a few minutes on the mill soon fixes that.
