Mk1 chrome /stainless hubcaps
Mk1 chrome /stainless hubcaps
Does anybody know the hot oil on standard Mk1 Mini hub caps? I have noted there are both chrome-over-steel and stainless steel varieties and I am wondering if this is an early/late thing or simply an alternative supply, perhaps even aftermarket. If there was a change it seems to me it would have been around 1966, going by what information I've been able to gather from cars from the time.

I wondered about this one myself Al. Will be interesting to hear some comments on this one.

I would imagine so, probably a bit of roofing tin judging by there feedback.minimans wrote:I have seen on ebay an Indian outfit selling MkI hubcaps are they as bad as they look? anybody tried them?

Both types are in parts book with no crossover body number. So probably used concurrently.
Re: Mk1 chrome /stainless hubcaps
I think it may be a bit like the chrome trims around the doors that were actually stainless steel as I have 60+ trims kicking around including the square hole variety with riveted rims to go with them but they are all stainless except for some early moggy minor trims that are chrome on steel..and rusty.
I know Minispares sell chromed caps but I haven`t found any original ones in 35 years of hoarding but maybe they rotted quickly and were replaced by stainless ?

Hi abs,
There are definitely chrome-over-steel caps, I have a few of them.

I also have 4 chrome ones, they are a different shape as well. They have the part number written in marker on the inside.

They are a slightly different shape, more flowing in the curves. I bought a set of NOS ones here, they had BMC stickers on the backs but lost the stickers when I had the caps rechromed. They look lovely on the 850 and replaced the original chrome-over-steel ones that weren't quite perfect.Nevsmini wrote:I also have 4 chrome ones, they are a different shape as well. Anybody else got information on hubcaps?

Those are indeed very nice. I'd love to come across a set.
