interchangeability of drum and disc brake front hoses
evening....
my memory is going.
Other than the length are the front brake hoses interchangeable between drum and disc brakes?
Would the longer drum brake ones foul anything if fitted to disc brakes?

There's bugger all between them, the type for Disc being slightly longer and these are what I fit to both and never found it a problem.
Yes, fittings and threads both ends the same.

Re: interchangeability of drum and disc brake front hoses
Unfortunately this is not correct. Of course the threads fit on the drum brake as well as on disk calipers. But the hoses for disks are shorter not longer. If you change from drum brakes to disks without changing to the shorter hoses, the lower loop of the hoses wil rub against the tie bar rods while cornering. As long as the steering is centered and the Mini is lifted there seems to be enough space but with weight on wheels and full steering it's not.Spider wrote:There's bugger all between them, the type for Disc being slightly longer and these are what I fit to both and never found it a problem.

The very early drum brake hoses were longer. The later drum brake cars were shorter. The difference (if I recall) in length is only 1/4" between these and disc types.Dr.Mabo wrote:Unfortunately this is not correct. Many (all?) of our local suppliers only sell one hose under P/N BFH1116 - Brake Hose - Front - Disc and Drum.

Re: interchangeability of drum and disc brake front hoses
Maybe this is based on local parts production and supply.
As I changed my 84' HLE Mini from drum brakes to disk brakes (one of the last drum brake models), the hoses were too long and had contact with the tie rods. This is based on my personal experiance with European Minis.

Re: interchangeability of drum and disc brake front hoses
I have our hoses made locally these days as the hoses we buy from the main wholesale mini parts business in Australia are too short, and are stretched too much on full lock.

Here in Aust. our Steering Racks and Arms were MkI geometry from start to finish.
In the UK, the longer Drum Brake Hose was introduced with the UK MKII to cope with the tighter turning circle. The Disc ones were already long enough and so didn't need to change.
850man, I gave up buy from that lot a few years back. They used to stock good quality parts but these days, only rubbish comes out their doors. Sad.
