11AC alternator wiring negative earth

Post by KA2S4 »

Hi guys,

I'm going to fit an 11AC to the "rally car"

Car is currently neg earth and has a std C40 dynamo.

I also have the 4TR, a 6RA and a new solid state 3AW

I found a diagram but it's positive earth, how do I convert this diagram to negative earth?
or has someone got a more correct diagram?

All help much appreciated.

James.

Excellent!

Thanks, just what I was after.

Not sure if I'll run an ammeter, How do you remove the ammeter from that circuit?

Also the ignition switch and separate starter are confusing me a bit...

:? Well you just run the main battery feed (brown) to the alternator from the solenoid. If you are not rewiring from scratch you will have to go to your dynamo control unit which you can take off (the 4TR does it's job) and if you alter the conections so they comply with the alternator diagram I would not advise you connecting your heavy brown & yellow to the heavy brown (wire is too small) do as my first sentance with correct size wire. It only sounds hard :o study your mini wiring diagram.
"Also the ignition switch and separate starter are confusing me a bit" They all start fom the solenoid. I hope this helps and does not confuse. ;)

I'm trying to reconcile the new diagram with what i currently have.

At the moment the key switch has 3 terminals.

(3) is power in via the solenoid-control box A1-A
(2) is first key click supplies power to terminal D via ign warning light and also power to coil etc
(1) is momentary power to starter solenoid to power up the starter motor

this is the part i can't seem to match up with the new diagram for 11AC.

I really don’t understand how you can’t follow the Lucas diagram take no notice of the two ignition switches, and just look at the one it has 5 terminals but it is Basically doing the same as yours with different No’s .

The dynamo control unit terminals A is where you would connect an ammeter, A1 aux feeds, F field windings, D dynamo main terminal, and E earth. When you disconnect this unit you will loose the power that it supplies through A1 to your ignition switch and lighting so you have to make a connection off your solenoid to obtain a battery feed (new wire and connectors) then you also have to do similar procedure to your field and main feed & ignition warning light because if you are connecting the 3AW it controls your warning light (unlike your dynamo who’s field was fed through the warning light) the 6RA in conjunction with 4TR supplies the field windings.

Study both diagrams carefully.

8-) ;)
PS
Use the original wiring where practical.
