SU AED Unit

Post by Spider »

A friend has a HIF44 and was wondering if SU ever had an AED Unit (Automatic Choke) that was fitted to these?

Also, were they any good or prone to problems?

Are they still available? (The SU Website isn't friendly in this regards).

Rich - you'd have to be a guru on these, I'm guessing they were fitted to Jags.

Cheers guys.

Hi Spider

The Ambassador 2.0 had twin HIF44's fitted with an ASU it was not Electronic like the later type fitted to the Maestro / Montego.
These are taken from the Leyland workshop manual. As you can see it was fixed to the bottom of the float chamber.

They are on the SU web site, search under car make and model for Austin Maestro

As they have ASK next to the part number they probably only get these when NOS items turn up.

NOS HiF carbs with the electric choke turn up on Ebay, there's one here

You need an ECU to control the stepper motor on an HFIE

They'll probably be well failed by now as they were trouble over 20 years ago. The trick for 1275 Maestros/ Montegos was nip up the scrappie and get the std carb of a van and fit that and a choke cable.

Got one somewhere if you need it.

I was working in the SU development workshop when they were developing those bloody things.

As an apprentice you can guess who got the job of hand winding the coils for the stepper motor.

The coil wires were always breaking, not sure if it was cheap enamel on the wire, the heat or the vibration but once they broke you had to unwind the bobbin and rewind it.

Took about 3 hours, you couldn't go quickly otherwise the wire would stretch and the enamel would crack and then you had to start again.

Seemed to me a slightly thicker gauge wire would have been better....

Many thanks guys for the info, particularly the drawing and exploded diagram John and Surfman. We never got Montagos here - is that good or bad?

I've talked it over with my mate and we both feel this would be more trouble than it would be worth, given that an ECU and other bits would be needed.

Ivor - thanks for the insight, appriciated.

Smithy, I've rewound small motors by hand, and it's a cow of a job!
