I received a set of new rubbers for my Austin 850 Basic/Standard with the fixed rear side windows today and spent two hours struggling to get one in with no luck.
Does any one know a method that doesn't destroy the rubber, the window, the bodywork or your soul?
Any tips would be appreciated. I've tried soap and other lubricants. I want to give it another try tomorrow so thought I'd ask for help, otherwise next step is the bin and fitting proper windows that can open.
not what you want to hear, but i got a local windscreen company come out and fit my front, rear and fixed side glass. far easier, then i know they were fitted and sealed properly. plus i did not want to crack the original glass. ( it was not auto glass , but a local family run business )
i did watch him do it with string, and be a second pair of hands
fit the rubber to the glass,
wrap cords around,
get a second pair of hands to support the glass in the opening
go inside and ease the corner over the lip, pulling the cord out as you go, and the person on the outside applying pressure as you go round.
use lots of spray to help it slide, i think he just use window cleaner, an quite a bit of it
take your time, if its not right push it back out again. and try again,
I agree with getting some professional help. I usually do glass myself but on the MGA coupe I'm just finishing up I managed to break the original front glass trying to get it in, Had an old boy come round and bit of string and some lub it was in in 10mins! so he did the the three piece rear while he was there....................$120 all in........Less than the cost of the broken glass................
When I've done them it's always been a two man job. String in the rubber with plenty of washing up liquid so it doesn't tear the rubber as you pull it out. One man on the outside holding the glass and putting gentle pressure where needed and then the man on the inside slowly pulling the string out.
I didn't think the front and rear pulled in with cord .I put the seal in the aperture then eased the glass in with plastic tool, then put insert in
Side windows were done with cord
14 years doing car glass, its fun watching some trying to string a mini screen
when I was fitter could do a mini in 10 mins. Don't mind teaching at Blyton lol
Thanks gents for the advice. I can't remember how I got my last set of these windows into another car a few years ago but it was a one man job and no strings were used. This time though, two man job and a string and I'm happy to report they're in!!
