Gear coating

Post by Thorp »

Hi guys,

This may have been discussed at length before but is it possible to get the moly coating on gears reapplied?

I have a cooper s gear that has a chip in the coating.... Maybe easiest to buy a new one ?

Thanks

Isn't the "coating" just a very tiny amount in thickness?
(Or am I just being a LOT thick?).

The gears will surely be case-hardened and any visible chip would remove this,
as well as any coating.

I am not so sure that re-coating would have any benefit for "chipped" gears.

He talking about the coating where the synchromesh ring fits the gear. That gets chipped or worn over time.

if its just a chip I wouldn't worry too much about it

I just use a small file / oil stone and remove the sharp edges where the missing bit has broken off. I then check the cone with a worn baulk ring (so it slides easy) and some blue just to make sure that the moly around the visible chip hasn't started lifting away.

its a shame to just throw a gear away for a small chip if the synchro teeth are in good order, once the box is running the baulk ring wont be concerned about a missing bit of moly, the surface area is so large that the baulk ring will still centre and grab whats left

Here's one place that does them;-

Yes, in the US, but don't be put off by that.

Also, ask around some Gunsmiths, fairly common process used there.

Before getting something done, ask them to show you a similar product that's been done by them on a similar base material. There are coaters and there are coaters

Now, I'm not sure exactly what BMC used on the mini syncro cones, but these guys may have an idea and a solution.
