boot lid seal problem
Hello guys,
A well known problem
I just get a new project, I will do a detailled post later
Of course it's a mk1
I fitted the boot seal, withe the 26 clips etc..
Impossible to close the boot..
I put all my energy but impossible,
I wouldn't like to break the boot hinge,
is there any trick or tip to make the boot closing?
THank for your help!
Cheers!

Re: boot lid seal problem
i ended up using the self additive seal from phoenix, works well and has a good seal and locks without feeling like your going the break the lock.

Thank you for your reply
There is some really bad spares on the market.. it's a shame, minispares stuff are more and more crappy..
I will try to find a Nos one,
Unfortunately the previous owner putted an horrible seal that has nothing to deal with minis!! so I can't use it anymore

Re: boot lid seal problem
As I want to keep the car as original as possible,
Does anyone knwo if the "Fits on the boot lid with clips
£6.00 per metre SRS 120
Early models 2.50 m £15.00"
Is the same seal sold by minispares?
I would like to avoid self adhesive seal
Thank you

Re: boot lid seal problem
I went self adhesive on mine can't find anything with that almost flattened cross section
to fit almost used the later seal that fits on the aperture but trying to maintain the old
look when the boots open.Plus the sticky one means the twin tank vents going round the
back window were easier to fit

Re: boot lid seal problem
They are tight... I used a mini spares last year it's fine. But I'm pretty certain it's handed. Check you've not got it inside out. My first repro wasn't handed and the boot could not be shut. The minispares took a good shove but it does go.
I've got a 69 Mini with a 1046, Cooper Head and a four on the floor.

Re: boot lid seal problem
I sourced my boot lid seal from Somerford, along with the clips.
Worth mentioning that my boot lid is a genuine panel, I've heard the repro boot lid panels are rarely a good fit.
After spending a good while trial fitting the seal (measure twice, cut once), I found the process of clipping the seal in place to be relatively straightforward but some of the clips didn't lock into place as cleanly as others.
Closing the boot takes time (my experience) as it is necessary to compress the new seal with sensible pressure and make sure it is sitting right.
Having a warm workshop helps.
The only seals I did struggle with were the rear quarters, really poor fit, would certainly be ruining the piano hinges if you tried to force them home. I've opted to try the Phoenix seals, following recommendations on various forums.

Re: boot lid seal problem
Hello,
It's the original boot, so no adjustment problem,
I think the genuine one will be good,
But with the minispare one, I tried everything, to push the boot with my knee, with all my "power", this won't never close
I had the same problem with my baby mk1, with the rear quarter seal,
Impossible to close it,due to a repro seal,
I finally fitted mk3 seal and it shut perfectly

Re: boot lid seal problem
have you fitted it the right way round?
if you fit it back to front, the boot will not shut as the rubber can not compress as the lip of the bodywork is pushing against the solid rubber part, rather than the hollow part
can you put a photo up?

Re: boot lid seal problem
Hello rich,
I mounted exactly like my other mk1 and my mk2,
But I bought the other seals 3 years ago
I had the same problem with rear quarter seal,
and I won't talk about grill surround on mk1.. just a shame
Sorry guys, but I prefer to fit original spares

Re: boot lid seal problem
Hello Rich,
The previous owner bought it a few weeks ago before I bought the car He leaved it on the rear parcel,
I bought my other seals on my ars on minispares, 3 or 4 years ago, and It's totallly different
He said that it comes from minispares, an error?
So I ordered a NOS seal.. wait and see!
