Rick Cutting. Rick Cutting. Rick Cutting......
Why does that name have a certain ring to it?
What else did he do?? Who was he? Where was he from??

Rick raced Mini's and Metro's for years, but more recently he has been racing a Dolomite Sprint in Historic saloons, I know he went to France to do a street race every year, can't remember where it was though.
We bumped into him at Race Retro last year, hadn't seen him for about 25 years !!!
I've just looked at an old programme and it listed him as coming from Cobham, Surrey.

Re: 1980's Mini Racing Photos
In the early 80s TRIPLE C magazine ran a "win racing Metro Turbo" competition, this car was won by Rick- he never really got it going that well- i dont know why as the car was built by Peter Baldwin. I might add that Triple C gave a formula ford season to Tim Harvey ( he crashed it -breaking 1or2 limbs and never drove it again). They also gave away a drive in first season of Formula First to a young lady driver who,s name i cannot recall , anyway she did a Harvey and crashed in the first round of the championship, I happened to be visiting relative in queen mary,s hospital , Sidcup when said driver was brought in-as i was leaving she was coming out of casualty still in Nomex but sitting ina wheelchair wearing a pair of white foam ward slippers i told her how much i liked her QUALIFYING BOOTS but she and boyfriend seemed to have suffered humour failure! i would like to add that nobody without experience of competition ever won a Triple C comp. Good job too looking at how well that lot did.

I had forgotten I have an old friend who now lives locally to Angouleme and has invited me down to the event in the past, as he goes to it every year, he too being a classic car enthusiast, so one day maybe I will take him up on the offer.mzmini wrote:Have been it's great event worth the trip

By-the-way, PB only includes the top spec in his race cars if PB is the one doing the driving.
And I know who that lady driver was...... She's now doing extremely well at something else.

Re: 1980's Mini Racing Photos
Just by chance I kept the Triple C Magazine pages that covered Rick's season in the MG Metro Challenge 1983, just had a quick read and I am really surprised he wasn't more competitive, as his car was set up by BMR, who set up many of the front runners in the series and he had a Longman engine, a race Metro was a strange animal though and didn't suit everybody.YMJ wrote:That would've been it. Re: 1980's Mini Racing Photos
I posted these old photos I took (at Lydden I think) in an earlier page of this thread but have since been asked on TMF by a New Zealand Mini racer for more details on the type of engine/head fitted......anyone know the spec?

Chris Tyrrell was also never as happy or competitive driving his Metro as he was his many Mini Se7en race winning cars.Maguire Mini wrote:YMJ wrote: Just by chance I kept the Triple C Magazine pages that covered Rick's season in the MG Metro Challenge 1983, just had a quick read and I am really surprised he wasn't more competitive, as his car was set up by BMR, who set up many of the front runners in the series and he had a Longman engine, a race Metro was a strange animal though and didn't suit everybody.

Looks like a Ford cross flow to me. Block does not look right for an A series.

It was guys like Chris Tyrell who inspired me to have a dabble in a Se7en.
Best club racing back then with full grids, nothing better.
