4.5" reverse rims - 145 or 165's ?

Post by Andrew1967 »

Just acquired some reverse rims and fancy putting them on the pick up.

Question is do I use 145's or 165's ?

I remember having 145's on reverse rims on my first Mini but thinking that 165's would look better. Would 165's push the tyres out of the arch on a standard drum brake set up ?

Cheers

I had that wheel / tyre combo on a MK3 with drums and that needed arches.

I always prefer the LP918 / 165s combo.

I drive them on my traveller without wheel arches. They fit perfectly on the rear with small drums an 3 mm spacers and in the front with 7.5 disk brakes and 1.5 negativ arms.

I've had a range of tyres on my reverse rims but of late I've been running Yoko A008s 165 on my rally Mini. But as I'm running arches I've not minded them sticking out. When I did have them on the Traveller I used the 145 Falken.

Thanks for the replies and photos :D

50-50 split so far.

I've a while to go yet before I need to think about buying the tyres so any more views welcome.

Cheers

Great question Andrew, I was just wondering the same.

It sounds like 145s are the way to go for 4.5" wheels. I have 165s on a set of 5" minilites and they stick out of the wheel wells a bit. I think I'll go with 145 Falkens when the time comes for the 4.5" steels soon.

Hi there,

On my clubman estate, I have reverse rims with cooper s brakes and spaced drums on the rear. I also have a fair amount of camber too which does help.

Originally I was running the 165 falken without arches, the tread did protrude slightly but I never had an issue.

I now run the same set up with Yoko A059r's, again 165, but the tyres "appear" slimmer and do not really stick out at all.

Hope this helps

Matt, I like your Dunlop toe gauge. I have had mine for 25 years. All this time I have been on the hunt for the Dunlop CG/4-5 Wheel camber, castor and king pin gauge. I recently found it complete in the box and it appears to never have been out of the box. I also picked up the turn tables a couple of years back. Would not need the tool to agree you are carrying quite a bit of negative camber.

Staying on topic I have run Dunlop 5X10 wheels with 145 and 4.5 S wheels with 165 and both are close but covered running .75 neg front .5 neg rear. Steve (CTR)
