Hydro Rear arms

Post by STG95F »

Just stripping down the rear arms on my 1966 Cooper and i have noticed the arms have a white plastic cap/bung

Never seen this before and i have more arms with the same part number but no white caps or hole

What are the caps for ??

Also the rear shaft from the knuckle to the displacer has an orange marking band , again never seen that before ??

Dunno what the plastic bung was for, can't say I've seen anything like that on Hydro Arms before, though I doubt yours are unique.

The Orange Band on the Rod means it's a later one, fitted with the later series Hydro Displacers. It will have a different length to the earlier ones and was fitted up with a different length helper spring too.

Great thank you

I must admit i have never seen a hydro arms with the white bung and i have seen a few over the years :geek:

The Spring helpers also has a Orange plastic collar , so that would tie in then ?

WELL WELL WELLL!
I thought I had seen just about everything on these MK1 cars...Nope! Once again....another surprise.
Just pulled out a set of rear arms from a Jan 67 MK1 S....yep! they have those holes with the 'bungs' in them. Checked my 67 S...it has them as well!

Geeeeees! you want everything! LOL>
I also checked a set of regular MK2 mini arms...they don't have them!
The holes might have something to do with the casting process....be interesting to weigh one of these arms versus the weight of standard hydros amrs....maybe these S ones are lighter......just a thought!

Our Moke Arms (which are longer) were made locally and had a similar hole, but bigger and further around to Pin area, so that it's more or less opposite the arm itself. These had a plated steel 'spring' plug in them. From what I've been able to work out, that was used for the core mould during casting.

Just wondering if these were done in a similar way?
