Lower front gearbox steady on earlier cars

Gents,

I've been struggling to do things on the car as I am waiting for my engine to be dropped in before I can carry on with anything, so I thought I'd look at the steadies etc.

Now on my 93 car it has a steady going from the front of the front subframe to the gearbox, but on my racer there is no bracket on the subframe? When did they introduce the front lower steady and what do you folk with earlier cars do with regards extra steadies?

The front steadies must have come in some time after the end of production here (in 1978) because Aussie cars don't have them. The best steady is a big alloy gear change extension bolted from the back of the gearbox to the underside of the floor.

I've added a bracket to my early dry front subframe only yesterday.
Seeing as I want to use a rod change housing inside my Woody I thought I'd need a couple of extra engine steadies.
Can't use an attachment so will have to use the bucket.

Forgot to add that I had a later single bolt subframe so took all the sizes etc from that.

Thanks for that, looks like I have to crack the welder out unless I can use rear ones?

The rear gearbox mounts don't do much. The front lower mount works well. Make the subframe bracket strong, I have seen a subframe crack and split apart at the bracket.

There is a good, discrete top engine steady bar that was fitted on the ERA turbo. It fits to the usual bulk head fixing and to the water pump bolts.

I can't find a picture but Avonbar made them.

It probably wouldnt have split/cracked if the person had kept the bushes in good condition! and the rear box steadies do make a HUGE difference! they stop alot of torque action and they also act against the top steadies (if you have two). If you think about it the more steadies you have the more restricted movement! The steady IAIN is refering to is now being made by wood and pickett. I have one and its much nicer than the ultimate type.
