Diff cover brgs

HI,
looking for suggestions on how to remove the 2 diff cover, bronze change shaft bearings? Thanks

its easy

drill them through the right size to be able to tap them 1/2unf (from memory!) and then screw a 1/2 bolt into one of them to make it 'blind', then use a hammer and a punch to knock it out, put the bolt into the other one and repeat.

takes ten minutes, no risk of damage to the case.

the hardest part is finding a drill the correct size for the 1/2 (if that's what it was) tap, I had to buy one on ebay from hong kong of all places!

I reckon you must have used a 9/16"UNF or UNC tap Rich, the I.D. of the bearings is 1/2" already.
You can wind the 9/16" tap straight into the bearings and use a aluminium drift on the tap to knock them out, the UNC tap would be best.

I think you are right, it was a unc tap

ive been making a pair of axles today and used a 1/2 unf tap for them - I think that's where ive confused myself

ive actually got the hong kong drill, the tap and the little plug I made in a 'special tool' box, so will dig it out and confirm the exact size!

just returned from the garage. As above i think it must have been 9/16". My bushes are over 1/2 ". Ebay here i come. Thanks for the replies

Or a M14;



As 9/16 is 14.28mm, 14mm is a bit smaller, but still large enough to grip the bush for tapping out.

M14 can also be found more easily outside UK. Most tapp and die sets here stops at 1/2".

I only used a unf one as I already had a threaded drift (a cut down adjustable tiebar!)

I use an old selector shaft out of a gearbox that I linished the end of the shaft so its flat, I slide it into the hole and it grabs on the inner edge of the bush, then just tap them out with a hammer.
I have found that the new bushes they sell these days have too much clearance so I make my own out of bronze bar stock.

here is a picture of my 'full package'




tap = 5/8 unf

drill = 14.7mm (near as dammit the correct drill size for tapping size)

punch = minispares adjustable tiebar with the end cut off. its pre threaded 5/8 at one end and is cut long enough so the when its screwed into the old bush there is no danger of hitting the gearbox case / your hand when you are whacking it with a hammer
