The 'RedEx Special' mini - 59 MKK

Post by iain1967s »

Does anyone here know or own this car?

It went through the auctions a few times, first in 2013, then around 2014 and then later in Cambridgeshire.

I can't really identify any of the gadgets on the dashboard, but I'm particularly curious what the big metal bracket on the passenger side rail is for, the silver bar thing laying on the parcel shelf that looks like it might somehow slot into it, and what looks like some kind of gauge off a steam-engine mounted behind the steering wheel...

Some previous discussion on the eBay thread here and here.

I remember reading about that car years ago. It was owned by the same old bloke for years & had been improved to his taste.

Can't really remember much more. One of you bods with the photographic memories must be able to remember more.

Which one?!
The thing fastened to the passenger door is an ash tray
The thing fastened to the dash rail to the right of the switch panel is a cigarette holder/dispenser

Ah, I see the cigarettes now. Thanks.

Any idea about the other two mystery items I was referring to ?

Hard to tell from the pictures, but the sight glass thing is probably something to do with the Redex injection and the other maybe some form of heater or demister?

the round glass thing by the driverside A pillar / dash rail is part of the Redex lubricant system. My scrap / donor A40 had one fitted. The grey thing on the dash might be a heater to defrost the back window (obviously it's not in place) the hear from an element comes out a slot and rises, clearing the condensation.

I think that part on the dash shelf is the rear view mirror. Compare it with the shots that show the mirror in place.

Great spotting.

So now it's just the 'pounds per square inch head of steam' sight gauge to identify :)

The redex mini is a feature car in this month’s [May 2021] MiniWorld magazine.

The chrome sight gauge gadget is a Barnacle remote oil level indicator !

I hope that has been preserved in its original state and not restored, fantastic patina. Love the gear lever cranked extension, another one on top of that and the rear seat passenger could do the gear changes

This reminds me of another similar car, owned since new by an old boy who fitted every conceivable period extra into it. Kept a fuel diary and often did long trips to watch his football team home and away. Think the reg had “SPE” in it. Anyone remember this car?

I'm not too sure that these wonderful 'era' cars should stay as they are, especially that redex car. Yes, leave the body and patina. But as for the rest of the pure crap, like the gadgets and this that and the other...... anyway. To me, it makes me think what sort of sad old fart would fit that sort of shite!
