excessive rear tire wear - Ideas?

Hello all,

I am new to your forum so many thanks to Mark for all his work keeping this all functioning.

I am currently working toward getting my 1967 vintage countryman back on the road and I need some help from the experts… you folks. After a partial restoration some time ago, the rear tires have both worn excessively along the inside edges. The sub frame is old but appears solid for the most part. The sills need replaced and there is some rust damage inside the rear storage bins. the right side swing arm does show wear but the left side not so much even though the left tire is worse. So… help me figure out what is going on. Do I shim the swing arms to start? Replace them? Or does it look like I need to go further? Any responses will be appreciated.

Regards to all. Howard

it will be excessive toe that's scrubbing the tyres off, this will be either be

bent radius arms (but unlikely that both bent the same amount),

worn radius arm pins (the arms will flap about and scrub the tyres off),

poorly reconditioned radius arms (where a top hat bush has been pressed on the piss into an old arm to try and recover a very worn arm),

a bent subframe (again, odd that both tyres would wear the same)

or someone has in the past filed the brackets to try and increase the toe and got carried away.

the best way to be sure is to get the geometry checked once any excessive wear is removed - this will tell you where to start looking for problems
