Holy hell, why so expensive?!? If you want authentic then you pay the price but I'm sure you could have one fabricated for less!

The plastic ones do the job. I've fitted several of them since they are produced (10 years now !), I never had any troubles with them.

And you don't need to go as far as Australia for one, Berni from BMC Austria stocks them I believe. He had one at the IMM last year which I had a good look at.

Recovering the tooling costs for low volume production is normally a factor for items like this. You can pick up welded fabricated rh tanks cheaper on ebay but whether they are new or old they look a bit 'Frankenstein' in shape and finish.....

Alex, I was impressed with its closeness to original in shape and detail. I thought about buying one but money was bit tight and I got a beautiful Aquaplane cylinder head from him instead.
Some people are wary about the plastic tank in the event of an accident but I think that the impact resistance of that compared to steel would be fairly similar. The plastic seemed to be 3 or 4 times thicker than a steel one.

Yes Nick, I was also impressed by the thickness. I was also scared about what could happened in an accident, but all modern cars also have plastic fuel tanks !
