No fuel or water temp gauges are working ?

Hi folks {new member} long term observer.

I went out to the garage to start getting the car ready after being off the road for the winter . As far as I can remember I put it away in working condition .... After fitting a new seal and clutch plate / set timing etc. I started the car up . I was wanting the car up to running temp for the timing . The top Rad hose had heat in it but the temp gauge is showing no change after 10 mins of running the engine. The fuel gauge doesn't appear to be working either but I think there is around 6L of fuel in the tank but it doesn't budge from empty on gauge. The rest of the dials / lights / oil pressure are working.

Could these 2 problems be linked ? I'm no good with wiring diagrams.
Has anyone experienced this problem and knows how to go around fixing the problem?

I haven't tested the temp gauge as I have no friends to watch the gauge inside the car.

I know what can cause a temp gauge not to work etc. but I am suspect both problems are amounting from something else.

any ideas ?

The car is a 1967 mk1 dial arrangement .

thanks

both of them take their voltage from the voltage stabiliser, so you would have to suspect that its either that, or the supply to it.

easily checked with a multimeter though

Hi, thanks for the reply, how would i test the voltage stabilizer? Would that fault effect anything else? Thanks

check the dark green wire for the input voltage - which should be 12v

check the light green wires for the output voltage - which is less, but I cannot remember what! but I think its round about 10-11 volts?

as long as the output volts is roundabout there, then the stabiliser is working, and so should the instuments

The output voltage averages out at 10 volts but it achieves it by switching the (nominal) 12v on an off. I'm not sure how fast they switch, but if you test it with a digital multimeter, it will probably just seem to jump around and be hard to make sense of. An old analog meter might be able to smooth things out a bit and should hover around 10V, unless the on and off periods are quite long.

Hi guys , thanks for the check list , The problem was the voltage stabiliser and spade connector. Ended up cleaning all the terminals sprayed some WD40 on them , stuck it back together and all is working.

thanks guys
