Touring Car Legends
Touring Cars Legends, Episode 1
Wednesday 5th February on ITV4 from 8:00pm to 9:00pm
A fascinating three-part series about the history of the British Touring Cars Championship from its birth in 1957 up to the present day. The first programme looks at the very early years in the late 1950s when competitors would actually drive their cars to the meetings dressed in their Sunday best. The very first meeting was at Brands Hatch on Boxing Day 1957 and it was then known as the British Saloon Car Championship

The History of British Touring Car Racing it was not.
Great period footage and interviews - many clips I don't recall seeing before - and they are to be congratulated for that.
As any sort of structured "history" it was utter drivel. They obviously meant to describe Boxing Day 57 as the first round of the first (58) championship - but claimed it to be the first ever race. Many years of history before, not least the lumbering Jag Mk7 years, but to them it began with 3.4s.
They even missed a classic chance for sensationalism. Much footage of Hawthorn in Dino 246 at 58 BGP Silverstone meeting (touring cars?) and reference to his driving 3.4s. No reference to him driving his own "VDU" at its only race, the Daily Express Silverstone 58 meeting: the car that killed him in Jan 59 on the Guildford by-pass.
More modern stuff of little interest to me - except Rouse still attempting to justfy Walkinshaw's use of Volvo rockers on Rover 3500. Talk about never admitting to the crime...

It was O.K while the 60's part lasted. Most of the footage i've seen. Great to hear the drivers though.

If you missed it you can download it on ITV Player for a month.

I watched it, it wasn't to bad but it did seam to skip through to the end of the 1980's rather quickly. Some good footage here and there.

Hard to please everybody I suppose, the latter half of 60's were omitted completely ,Fitzpatrick , Rhodes and Longman didn't even get a mention but overall I enjoyed the watch. Nice footage of Fitz though actually in an early Broadspeed 1071 battling with an Anglia at Brands , spotted that Viking Hornet we talked about a while ago and loved the colour footage from Aintree of Jim Clark and snippets of Jeff Goodliff. The ads drove me nuts but hey, what can you do.

Some of the Mini racing clips and commentary were taken from the '1960's Mini Racing DVD' if you want to see more:-

"As the title suggests, 1960s Mini Racing is one for those of you who love the period footage of Minis on the limit and, occasionally, beyond it! Made up from footage put together by Roscoe Films, we can watch Minis in the thick of the action at Brands Hatch, Cadwell Park, Castle Combe and Mallory. Often thrown into the Saloon car races, it’s a battle of little and large, with huge Ford Galaxies taking up much of the track space.
Big name drivers include Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Dan Gurney and Bruce McLaren. Filmed in colour and with classic 1960s commentating, 1960s Mini Racing is a real step back in time.

The full Gordon Spice Mini race footage at Crystal Palace in 1969 is on this DVD:-

I'm sure John was wondering why the hell he'd let the two no hopers in the back whilst trying his best to get the back end of your car out .

I think we'd have made a half decent 'old boy' band.
