Anyone here taking part in the 2014 Tour of Cheshire ? . well it looks like I am !!!!!! . following a 20 + year absence from rallying I put in an entry and it was accepted . now that has posed a few problems , my 1965 Cooper S is in boxes , ( I took it apart following the 1991 Circuit of Ireland retro to do a major resto and it is still not finished ) Plan B is My 998 MK2 Cooper its a standard car and will be pressed into service for this event . really looking forward to getting back to some tests and regularities . now I need some advice , what is the best all round tyre for this type of event ? . any advice is appreciated .

Having done this event in previous years its a mixture of mud , loose and tarmac , would suggest Yoko A008 as loose and mud is not that extensive as tarmac.

I would agree an A008 would be the best all rounder for the TOC and won't break the bank.

Thanks guys , I used to use A008s 'back in the day' and whereas they worked on events here in Ireland I was not too sure about surfaces on this event , as said they are decent value as well . now all I need is to get the 998 ready and book the ferry !!

We always used the A008 in the early nineties on events such as the Classic Illuminations and the Targa Rusticana and thought they were great on the full range of surfaces encountered. We had some success which might be taken as a sort of endorsement as to their suitability.

Hope you have great event, will be watching for the results.

I used A008s years ago and found them decent on most surfaces , ordered 6 of them Today so that is one problem sorted , next problem is my Navigator is committed to a ski holiday the same weekend as the TOC and I am now trying to recruit a replacement , then its get the car out of storage and fit sump guard , trip meter , etc etc ,

Into the Garage at home this morning and pulled the cover off the MK2 998 Cooper , suspension down on one side , battery flat , no petrol , ok off to the workshop and picked up the battery charger , suspension pump , and some fresh petrol , back home and attached the suspension pump expecting some difficulty with leaking etc BUT no just a few minutes it was at ideal height , petrol in and battery charged turned the key and start 1st time , now that was the easy bit , off to the workshop next week and begin the preparation for the TOC , as this car is only a stopgap measure until the 65 S is finished and will be going back to being parked up for most of the time I have a decision to make , do I convert to dry in the interest of better reliability / performance in rough conditions Or do I make sure hydrolastic is checked over and fit front dampers and rear bump-stops etc as we did 'back in the day' ?

Take the easy route stick with what you have, concentrate on the navigation and the driving in that order and most of all remember this is for fun!

Very best regards

IMO comp bump stops will help a bit against a bag failure.
