Special camshaft? 2 pinion gears ( 1 for dry sump I think)

Hello All!
I bought this camshaft recently, does anyone has more information on it?
Is this cam worth something?
It is an AEG-643. I have been told it was used in old formula juniors.
Can this be used with any mechanical fuel pump?
grtz!

I do recall those. The second drive was for the Lucas Mechanical Injection. Obviously a little difficult to squeeze in to a Mini!

I gather it is true you could connect a scavenge pump to the gear and people did. The comment about PI makes more sense as more were used.
No you can't use a normal pump. You have to use an electric one.
If I recall correctly, the oil pump was available "off something". MGA? There was some part you could whack on and pipe up....I'm certain....I've got one of those memories which recall useless trivia.

Hmmm, I think it does belong to a mini though...

this is next to the cam I got out of my mini ) :
Do I need to use this special pump?
And does anyone know if there is a market for things like this? Would be silly to use it in my car if other people are searching for it...
There are plenty of 'normal' camshafts aviable for my purpose (more power :p )

I've never understood how dry sump could work on a Mini. Could someone please explain?

Hi

It's not a mini cam but an a-series cam fond in several engines in different cars. And yes, you can use it in a mini engine but with an electrical fuel pump.

Good valid point, but I've seen American Mini FWD SCCA racers that are dry sumped.

Oh, like that
I never thought about the fact that other cars also used the A-series... ( I'm new to mini since july this year

)
Being only 17, I bought this mini as a restauration project with my father ( who owned mini's and raced with cars whole his life)
For the fun : a before and after of the mini

not fully completed but still...)
Before :
After:
ANYWAYS..
Do you think that there are people out there that are in need of cams like this?

The extra gear drives an oil pump for the dry sump system used in the Formula Junior race cars.

a guy in Harrogate used to have a dry sumped 'big' arden race car, I think the dry sumping helped mainly to control the oil temperature and the foaming as there was so much more oil in circulation and so little actually in the gearbox.
he certainly had the results and the performance to back the value of the system up, but I suspect modern oils are probably the better option now

Thanks guys!
I probably won't be fitting a dry sump system though, as the car will be for road use only...
If someone wants to buy this camshaft I'll sell it though
grtz!

I wonder....when the engine is running (and everything is as oily as it can be) what is the oil level in the gearbox? Those gears are going to be slinging a load of it around and it must take a bit of power to change the direction/velocity of all those drops. However, the FJ engine didn't have a sump gearbox.
I'm wondering how having the oil in a container would also favour it's ability to be quickly introduced preheated (they used to be fussy about changing it due to wax formation and concerned about it's temperature due to it being a "straight 40" oil). If you had a scavenge tank, you could probably drop all the oil out quickly. I can't see them doing this myself.
If used with an evacu-sump, I imagine everything would work much better from a resistance point of view (and also drive off water vapour rather than it condensing and messing up your castor oil).
It has got to be about froth formation and the main oil delivery feeding a pretty froth free, continual stream of oil. They must have thought that wear/failure were related to the existing oil supply.
They are my thoughts.
I suppose modern racers would fit it purely to stop oil resistance in the box/crank, rather than froth formation.

But surely, on a Mini you'll need some oil in the dump for the gears??

I think they use and extra oil reservoir :p

The Group A MG Metro touring cars ran a dry sump system. I wonder if the one Swiftune rebuilt kept it?

Coopers (Downton) tried dry sumping for a time on Spice's Britax car in '69 with little improvement as reported by the driver.
