If you think about the number of 60's tuners still around the list is quite a short one. Yes there are some surviving big names in retirement and some tuners still working like Steve Harris , Bryan Slark and Peter Baldwin but someone that rarely gets a mention is Tom Airey still tuning cars in Hampshire...

Tom used to do alot of tuning for my Dad, so i've been up there many times including having my own cars done in the past, not cheap but old school (or should that be skool for the kids
) hand tweeking of needles on SU's ect with the rolling road at his house, and always a good story of the cars and people in period to be had.

Tom did my car back in the early nineties when it had a 'cooking' 1275 in it plus decent head -performed really well afterwards and enabled me to put in some good lap times at Coombe in the days when there was nothing between Quarry and Old Paddock bend and the latter was taken FLAT

Did mine too back in the early 90's. I heard about him through our local rally boy James Renwick, who was leading the 1988 Cellnet Autosport National Rally Champs in his Ford Escort Cosworth RS1800. TA tuned that to 255hp.

He's done mine a couple of times. Just drive through the gateway and then into the garage which will have the two wooden doors open waiting for you. Then see the rollers and the large dial on the righthand side, no high tech display here!
Tom tunes the engine and then sends you out on a short trip up and down the A272. Come back in for another little tweak perhaps and then into the kitchen for a cup of coffee and chat about allsorts and admire the fantastic view over the downs. Very old sc(K)hool!
