What's this stamped on my engine block??

Gents,

I'm freshening my 1275 S (that's now in the U.S., sorry...) and I believe this motor was worked on in the U.K. in either the late 1970's or early 1980's. There are numbers stamped on the main bearing caps and the outside of the block.

IP
575.8

A couple of the stampings don't have the decimal point, just a gap between the 575 and the 8...

Any theories? Might it have been a particular machine shop or known establishment? I'm not theorizing it was done by someone famous, more just my curiosity :)

Best Regards,

Chris

id say that's just a generic engine reconditioners mark - its a pretty common format, initials of the company or the man, and the job number

On my 64 S It has ...1P 475.
I always wondered what that was too.
As far as I know mine never has had any work done to the engine.
If it has, it sounds like the same person done the work.
My car was bought from someone in Leicester.

That's just the number to identify which main caps were machined and belong to the block.

Should be stamped on each main cap and near the water pump on the block. Simon can date most of them.
