On work's cars the front and rear quick lift brackets, were they bolted through the panel or the subframes also.

thanks Lord Croker, is it strong enough for the weight of the car with the engine or were any modifications done especially the front panel?

Were they not butted up to the bumper lip too? I'd think they would be ok with some washers on??

You are quite right tedmcedd, they do indeed butt up against the underside of the bumper flange, cpr1, I have a set on my Mini, there is no doubt about them being strong enough at the back, I did have concerns about the front , but the bolts with washers, as suggested, are very close to the front subframe mounting stiffener in the front panel on the outer leg of the bracket & although I don't (yet) have the quick lift jack, I use them to rest the car on axle stands & they do work. There are many versions of these brackets & I have seen some with metal strips formed like the legs of the brackets fitted behind the front panel, instead of using washers & I suspect giving a bit more strength. The Mini front panel, if free of corrosion is very strong, it used to be the norm in unscrupulous garages to jack a Mini at the centre behind the number plate, it was severely out of shape afterwards, but held the weight, quick lift brackets are much kinder to the metal than that. If I can be of any more assistance, please let me know, I used to sell these brackets.

Just bought a full set of brackets from Minispares and was wondering the same thing!

Going to have a go at building a Jack as a winter project I think. Does anybody have dimensions for these? There seem to be 2 distinct designs though; one with a tall and narrow handle, the other with a an upside-down U-shape!

I figure the taller of the 2 will have better leverage, but would prefer the smaller size of the other. Anybody have experience of these?

these have a dual use - IF there strong enough not to bend and IF you fix them correctly then you can easily set yours cars tracking by making 2 lengths square tube that fixes at a set point in the quick lift brackets , then its so easy to string the car up when youre at the track etc

Red Mist, I am also considering building one of these jacks, but have hit a brick wall when it comes to finding dimensions, but I would definitely go along with your thinking that the longer one would be better to use. Someone must have one of these, there were quite a few of them hanging on the wall at Abingdon in the 'good old days'. Nice photo of GRX5D in lightweight form, it makes a good comparison of the one I posted from it's earlier days. I'll keep you posted if & when I find out any more about the jacks.

My thinking exactly - a 'foldable' jack would be the best of both worlds.

Have made some measurements of my own based on the ride height of my car and how high it will need to be lifted to get the wheels off the ground - should have a prototype ready before Christmas hopefully.

I don't have any here at the moment, but I should be seeing my supplier tomorrow night, I'll see if he has any more lying around, or if he can find me another set. I was already thinking of getting a few more sets, they went well on ebay last time & seem to sell best in the winter when many enthusiasts are restoring & modifying! I'll let you know if & when I can supply them. Thanks for your interest.

That car's not been looked after properly I don't think with some poor work having been undertaken on it in recent years (also covered in surface rust underneath) but that's possibly about to change from what a man in the know told me at the NEC recently, and not before time !
