This has maybe already been discussed, and I'm only asking out of curiosity - what is the opinion on rear disc conversions? Are they worth the money for better brakes or are they just a gimmick?

*edit* If I was to fit them it would be to a road going Mini and wouldn't be for competition use at all.

Like I say this is just a curiosity query - I was on the KAD site and was looking at them which just got me wondering.

They will give slightly better braking performance, but it's almost academic, however there are advantages other than braking performance that these particular brakes do give, namely lower un-sprung weight, improving handling and ride, also low maintenance rear brakes.

Many years ago I did kits for the rear end of the big wheel mokes, I did my originally when we started a family and the weekend camping trips also meant towing a small trailer, so the balance of the moke was altered considerably and much more effective braking was done on the rear wheels. They also aided me with creek crossings in that rust wheel cylinders where a thing of the past and no need to do the manual adjustment

As there is a pressure limiting valve fitted to control the brake pressure to the rear (due to forward weight transfer under braking), I can't see that there can be any advantage of fitting discs to the rear. -the drums already give too much braking....

I would have thought that fitting Minifin alloy drum brakes would probably be lighter than discs anyway?
