Water temp sensor - info/help please

I'm after a new water temp sensor as it appears the one I have fitted in the car makes the OE Smiths temp gauge look like its running hot when in fact during some testing the actual temp of the water its around the mid 70's.
I have the non-regulated early gauge ('63 SDL) so I gather the part number of the sensor I am looking should be a GTR102 which appears to be NLA. Anyone out there know of where I can get a new replacement and any other accurate info that would help me in my search.
The more web searches and forum posts I read the more confused I get due to people saying it should be colour X or Y or the alternative other supplier number should be Z etc.
Any help appreciated.
PS. If anyone knows at what the actual temp should be when the needle sweeps into the red that would also be handy to know.
