I've got a 1964 mini van. It's a quite solid van but showing some little rust marks all over. The previous owner has gone about cleaning up and painting various places over the entire van hence got a little patchy look to it! I like the look of the van as it is but feel I should do the paint work up!
Should I
1) kurerust and paint up as previous owner
2) clean up and completely repaint 2k paint
3) clean up and completely repaint cellulose (preferred as would look original

Can see it in the project section

There are so many rust treatment products available, it's a subject which is very much a matter of personal taste & what works for you. Where external rust needs treating, I clean the area to bare metal & then apply POR Metal Ready, (Available from Frost's Auto Restoration in Rochdale) which is a chemical that neutralises the rust & coats the area in zinc phosphate. Inside box sections I use clear Waxoyl & on the underside of the car, I use black Waxoyl, with which I mix a little old engine oil because despite what they say, Waxoyl on exposed surfaces can dry out. Inside the floor pans, I apply Hammerite 'Smoothrite' in a colour as near to that of the car that I can get. My Mini is 32 years old, used all year round & has only ever required a front wing & an A-panel, the rest is as it left the factory apart from normal paint repais around wing / front panel seams etc. As regards the paint, personally I would go for cellulose every time, & if your van is a bit patchy, probably best to for for an all-over paint job.

I found Fertan the best. Some treatments leave a raised surface which is hard to hide under the paint. The main thing is to remove as much of the original rust as possible, especially the black specs in the steel. This is hard so that is why the rust treatment. Best rust patch removal is finish with a 3M paint stripper pad.

Am with Ivor on this one, Fertan is great stuff, then plenty of Bonda zinc primer, this can be thinned down and sprays on lovely, plus has no issues with other paint types when applied on top. Then its just 2k primer, paint etc job done, and for cavity wax etc I recommend Bilt Hamber products.
